Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Football History
The history of Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Football dates back to its beginning in 1892 when a group of students formed the team known as the Blacksmiths. The team faced Mercer University in its debut match on November 5, 1892, resulting in a 12–6 loss. Despite losing, the Blacksmiths sought improvement, eventually recruiting Leonard Wood, an Army officer, as a player-coach. However, success remained elusive, with Tech recording only eight wins from 1892 to 1903.
In 1893, Tech secured its first-ever victory against the University of Georgia, sparking the rivalry now known as Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate. The arrival of legendary coach John Heisman marked a turning point for the program. Under Heisman's leadership, Tech saw great success, including three undefeated seasons and a 32-game undefeated streak. Tech also achieved a historic 222–0 victory over Cumberland College in 1916, which is considered the most lopsided game in college football history.
During Heisman's tenure as head coach, Tech won its first national championship in 1917. Following Heisman's departure, William Alexander continued the team's legacy, leading Tech to its second national title in 1928. Despite facing challenges during the Great Depression, Alexander's dedication to encouraging campus spirit resulted in the establishment of the Yellow Jacket Club, laying the foundation for future generations of Tech football. Alexander retired in 1944, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of the most successful coaches in Tech history.
