Grayson McCall was born to the family of Jody McCall and Lisa McCall on the 13th of December 2000. However, the marital relationship of his parents wasn't to last long. After a series of issues, they settled for a divorce while the quarterback was at a young age.
McCall has two siblings; an older brother and a younger sister. They all lived with their mother following the divorce of their parents. McCall participated in a baseball team that played in a televised tournament but later quit the sport before attending high school.
Grayson McCall’s High School Career
McCall attended Porter Ridge High School in Indian Trail, North Carolina. The quarterback exhibited huge talent in his high school days. He committed every resource he possessed to his success in football. As a newbie, he assisted the team to move from a 1-10 record to three-straight North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A state playoff appearances between 2016 and 2018. He threw for 1,414 yards and 13 touchdowns while also rushing for 907 yards and 12 touchdowns in his junior year.
In 2018, young McCall led his team to a 10-5 overall record and a position in the NCHSAA 4A State Championship semifinals game where he threw 1,337 yards and nine touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,460 yards and 21 touchdowns. McCall's career at high school ended with 3,863 passing yards and 34 touchdowns as well as 3,003 rushing yards and 41 touchdowns. His dual-threat attribute has been evident right from his high school days. He was enlisted as a two-star recruit and eventually committed to Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
Grayson McCall’s College Career
During his first year at Coastal Carolina in 2019, McCall only played in two games and was subsequently redshirted. In those two games, he completed all four of his pass attempts for a total of 25 yards and scored a touchdown. However, McCall's fortunes changed in the following year, as he was appointed as the starting quarterback for the Coastal Carolina team in 2020.
In the 2020 NCAA football season, Grayson McCall gained recognition for his remarkable performance, leading the Coastal Carolina football team, which was expected to finish last, to an undefeated regular season. As a result, the team made its first-ever appearance on the AP and Coaches Poll, reaching the 12th spot on the rankings. McCall played a pivotal role in helping the team achieve its first-ever Co-Sun Belt conference championship and secured its first-ever bowl game appearance in the 2020 Cure Bowl, where they suffered their sole loss of the season.
Following the conclusion of the 2020 season, Grayson McCall was awarded the title of Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. In addition, he was named to the First-team All-Sun Belt roster and nominated for both the Davey O'Brien Award and Manning Award, which are prestigious honors recognizing outstanding college quarterbacks.
The quarterback recorded an improvement in his performance in the 2021 season. He played in 11 games for Coastal Carolina, throwing for 2,873 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also rushed for 290 yards throughout the season, scoring four touchdowns. McCall was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year for the second season in 2021. He emerged as the 2021 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award semifinalist. He was named to the CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy watchlist. The 2022 season was not an exception in the list of Grayson McCall's wonderful seasons in college football. He played 11 games once again for the Chanticleers and recorded 2,700 passing in 297 attempts with 24 touchdowns. The quarterback also had 195 rushing yards in 91 carries, scoring six touchdowns. It was made public that Grayson McCall had decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal on December 12, 2022. However, on January 1, 2023, ESPN reported that McCall had chosen to withdraw from the portal and would continue playing for Coastal Carolina during the 2023 season.
