Marcus Freeman is an American football coach, plying his trade with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. Freeman hails from Huber Heights, Ohio, and attended Wayne High School. He played college football at Ohio State University from 2004 until graduation in 2008. Throughout his playing career, he played as a linebacker and won four Big Ten Championships. He also played in three BCS bowl games and two National Championship games.

After his successful collegiate career, Freeman was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He also played for NFL teams like the Buffalo Bills and the Houston Texans before a medical emergency ended his playing career. Freeman graduated with a B.S. degree from Ohio State in 2007 and received his M.S. degree in sports management in 2011. He is married to Joanna and has six kids, Gino, Vinny, Nico, Siena, Capri, and Rocco. He joined Notre Dame in 2021 as the defensive coordinator and was promoted to the head coach position.

Marcus Freeman began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach for Ohio State in 2010. Following that stint, Freeman coached linebackers from 2011 to 2012 at Kent State. From 2013 to 2015, he was the co-defensive coordinator at Purdue, and in 2016, he became the defensive coordinator. Freeman moved to Cincinnati in 2017 until 2020, where he earned recognition for his defensive game. Freeman joined Notre Dame as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2021. He led the Irish defense to the top of the national rankings and became the head coach for the first time on December 3, 2021.
