The ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 will take place across the length and breadth of India between October 05-November 19.
With the introduction of two new balls from either end, and batter-friendly fielding restrictions, team totals have soared beyond recognition in the past decade.
In the previous 2 World Cups, teams have crossed 350-mark on a number of occasions.
On that note, here's a look at the highest team-totals from the previous 4 WC editions:
Highest Total in World Cup: from 2007 to 2023
Year | Team | Score | Overs | Opposition | Venue | Date |
2007 | India | 413/5 | 50 | Bermuda | Port of Spain | 19 March 2007 |
2011 | India | 370/4 | 50 | Bangladesh | Mirpur | 19 February 2011 |
2015 | Australia | 417/5 | 50 | Afghanistan | Perth | 04 March 2015 |
2019 | England | 397/6 | 50 | Afghanistan | Manchester | 18 June 2019 |
2023 | South Africa | 428/5 | 50 | Delhi | Delhi | 7 October 2023 |
The 2007 World Cup proved to be a nightmare for Team India as they bowed out in the league-stage following defeats to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
But, between those two defeats, came a batting performance where the team etched itself in the record books by hammering a record 413/5 against Bermuda.
The match is remembered for Namibia's Dwayne Leverock's stunning diving catch in the slip cordon to dismiss Robin Uthappa, but what followed after that was absolute mayhem.
Stung by a poor outing against Bangladesh, the likes of Virender Sehwag (114 off 87), Yuvraj Singh (83 off 46) and Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar (57* off 29) launched a fearsome attack to help India become the first-ever team to hammer 400+ runs in a World Cup game.
The record stood for 8 years, until it was eventually broken by Australia.
4 years later, India hosted the World Cup, alongside Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and in their very first outing- against Bangladesh- they made an imposing statement by smashing 370/4 in 50 overs.
The onslaught was built on a stunning 175 from Virender Sehwag , and a maiden World Cup ton from Virat Kohli.
The 2015 World Cup saw the 400-run-mark get breached on multiple occasions. Co-hosts Australia smashed 417/5 against Afghanistan at the WACA in Perth to overhaul the previous record of the highest team-total in World Cup history. As mentioned above, the record was previously held by India.
That Australia racked up 417/5 was largely due to a typically blistering century from opener David Warner. The southpaw hammered a 133-ball 178 with the help of 19 4s and 5 6s.
In 2019, hosts England lead the run-scoring charts following their epic mauling of the Afghanistan attack.
England's charge was led by their skipper Eoin Morgan, who smashed a record 17 sixes during his whirlwind 71-ball 148. His innings helped the eventual champions to rack up 397/6, which turned out to be the highest team total in that entire tournament.
