The Indian Premier League (IPL) completed its 18th season in 2025 with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lifting their maiden IPL title. First introduced in 2008, the IPL is the richest cricket league in the world. It includes 10 teams from 10 different cities of India and the franchises buy their stars through bidding at the IPL auctions.
The IPL has a number of individual awards to offer to the best performing players. The Purple Cap is reserved for the bowlers. The honor is awarded to the bowler who picks up the most number of wickets in a single season. Rajasthan Royals (RR) star Sohail Tanvir became the inaugural Purple Cap winner, which also contributed to his team becoming the inaugural IPL champion in 2008.
