Sri Lanka and New Zealand have battled each other six times over the course of the last eight editions of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The 2014 champions have won on four instances (including a Super Over win) while the Kiwis have come out on top on two occasions.
The Asian Lions won their first two encounters with New Zealand comprehensively by seven wickets (2007) and 48 runs (in 2009) before the BlackCaps pulled one back courtesy of a two-wicket victory in 2010.
Their most memorable clash took place in 2012, where 40 overs couldn't separate the two sides. Batting first, New Zealand rode on a 40-ball 58 from Rob Nicol to post 7/174 in 20 overs.
However, brilliantly knocks from Mahela Jayawardene (44 off 26) and T Dilshan (76 off 53) kept Lanka in the hunt. But a late middle-order collapse saw the game end in a stalemate. However, Lanka managed to defend 13 runs in the Super Over due to Lasith Malinga to escape with a victory.
The next encounter between these two teams will forever be remembered for Rangana Herath’s heroics. With Sri Lanka’s semi-final qualification on the line and a poultry total of 119 to defend, the left-arm orthodox produced a spell from hell (5/3) that consigned New Zealand to 60 all-out.
Eight years later, the Kane Williamson-led BlackCaps pulled one back over the Lankans, thanks to a magnificent ton from Glenn Phillips (104 off 64).
