About FedEx St. Jude Championship 2024
The nearly 60-year-old golf tournament, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, which was then called the "Westchester Classic," is one of the three annual FedEx events that determine the annual golf champion, who gets the FedEx Cup. For the first time since 2012, the FedExCup will be held in 2024 during the PGA Tour season. This will be the competition's 18th edition, held from August 15 to 18 at the TPC Southwind in Tennessee, U.S. The FedExCup is a points-based competition that lasts the entire season and concludes in three events to determine the FedExCup Champion: the FedExCup Playoffs.
The FedExCup Playoffs are open to the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings. The three events have progressive cut fields of 30 (Tour Championship), 50 (BMW Championship), and 70 (FedEx St. Jude Championship). The FedExCup Champion will get $25 million from the $100 million total purse for the FedExCup Playoffs.
FedEx St. Jude Championship History
The event started as a pro-am event at the Apawamis Club in New York, with its roots in Westchester. The event was founded by William Mitchell "Bill" Jennings, a well-liked spectator; it attracted a number of then elite players and merged into the Thunderbird Classic in 1961, which ran until 1968. The first St. Jude Classic, which was then known as the "Westchester Classic," was held in 1967 and was won by the legendary golfer Jack Niklaus.
Danny Thomas, the founder of St. Jude, and the authorities of Memphis collaborated to designate St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as the official charity of the Memphis Open golf tournament in 1970, after which the event was renamed the St. Jude Classic. FedEx took over as the official sponsor in 1986, and since 1989, the tournament has been held at TPC Southwind.
The World Golf Championships—FedEx St. Jude Invitational was again a name change for the event in 2019. However, the PGA Tour renamed the competition the FedEx St. Jude Championship in 2022 and upgraded it to a spot in the FedEx Cup, a three-tournament playoff to decide the year's champion. There's also a cause attached to the annual tournament, and that is that the Memphis tournament has supported St. Jude's life-saving efforts by raising more than $60 million for the organization since it first joined with the hospital for research in 1970.

FedEx St. Jude Championship 2024 Course
Ron Prichard, a renowned golf architect, created the par-70, 7,244-yard championship layout of TPC Southwind with the aid of Hubert Green and Fuzzy Zoeller, PGA Tour veterans. There are multiple lakes, streams, and ponds on the golf course, along with zoysia fairways and Bermuda greens. The remaining structures from the former dairy farm on the property, including a windmill and two grain silos, are left as they are, which add further appeal to the golf course.
The golf course has a reputation for being among the hardest on the PGA Tour schedule. TPC Southwind was placed No. 23 in the Exclusive PGA Tour Course Rankings published in January 2012 by Golf World magazine. The 165-yard, par-3 11th hole at TPC Southwind is one of the course's most famous holes. Some people compare it to the renowned 17th Island Green at TPC Sawgrass, as it requires a short iron over water for a small island green.
