About W-Asia Cup T20
The 2022 Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup was the eighth edition of the Women's Asia Cup tournament which took place from 1 to 15 October 2022 in Sylhet, Bangladesh. The tournament was contested between Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and United Arab Emirates.
On 20 September 2022, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced the schedule of the tournament. Bangladesh were the defending champions, having defeated India by three wickets in the final of the 2018 tournament to win the title for the first time. The tournament was played at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. The seven teams played in a round-robin stage, with the top four progressing to the semi-finals.
The UAE and Malaysia qualified for the tournament by reaching the final of the 2022 ACC Women's T20 Championship, which was played in June 2022 in Malaysia.In the round-robin stage, Thailand beat Pakistan by 4 wickets to register their first ever WT20I victory against their opponents.
Women's Asia Cup history
The inaugural edition of the Women's Asia Cup was a five-match one-day series between India and Sri Lanka held in Sri Lanka. India won all five matches and were crowned champions in 2004. The second edition saw the inclusion of Pakistan, where the tournament was being held. India beat Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the round-robin format before beating Sri Lanka in the final to clinch their second title.
The third edition was held in India in 2006. India once again won every match, including the final against Sri Lanka at the Sawai Man Singh stadium in Jaipur. The 2008 edition saw the inclusion of Bangladesh and was held in Sri Lanka. Once again, India won all six of the group games and again beat Sri Lanka in the final to make four successive Asia Cups.
The 2012 edition of the Asia Cup was the first to be played in the T20 format. It also saw the inclusion of four new teams in Thailand, Hong Kong, Nepal and China. The tournament was held in Guangzhou, China with the eight teams split into two groups, with the top two sides advancing to the semi-final and then the final. India won all three group games and qualified for the semi-final against Sri Lanka. The semi-final was washed out and India went through before beating Pakistan in the final.
The sixth edition of the Asia Cup was held in 2016, which saw six teams fighting for the title at Thailand. India won all five group games and went through to the final, where they beat Pakistan and claimed their sixth Asia Cup title.
Going into the seventh edition of the Women's Asia Cup, which will see Malaysia makes its debut, India have played 33 matches, won 32 and had one match abandoned. India, who are yet to lose a game in the competition, will look to continue their incredible streak of six successive Asia Cup wins as they head to Malaysia for the eight-day tournament.
