A comprehensive performance by the Seattle Orcas and the early signs point towards them being the side to beat in this tournament. As for the Unicorns, they will be disappointed but can take a lot of learnings from this as they seek to bounce back in the next game.
Wayne Parnell (Seattle Orcas captain): Like I said at the toss we were a little bit unsure. We obviously broke the curse last night chasing. I just had a gut feel that batting first on this wicket in the fourth game (was the way to go), get a good score. They got off to a bit of a flyer thanks to me (grins) but dragging it back like that, credit goes to the group. Coming into a franchise setup it's important to impress. For the younger guys it's about tapping into that experience. For us it's about keeping it simple. We don't want to complicate things and we don't want to give away too much information.
Aaron Finch (San Francisco Unicorns captain): I think we got ourselves into a position with the bat. Every time we got some momentum we lost a wicket. I think our bowlers did a great job to restrict them to 178 after the start they got. The powerplay was good. Just didn't get that big partnership to continue. (Quick turnaround played a big role?) It's same for both teams. We've played enough cricket around the world now that every now and then you've got to back up like this. A lot of guys have played four-day cricket and Test cricket. Yeah the heat got to the guys a bit but we were just beaten by the better side on the day.
Heinrich Klaasen is the Player of the Match for his sublime knock of 53. Here's what he has to say: Good to get a good game under the belt. Early doors in the competition so feels good. Every batter's got the template to go about. Looked to be aggressive against the spinners. If the ball doesn't turn a lot and it's in your arc, try and get it away. Just picking your spinners and if you get that feel, just go for it. I fell into the trap of taking the game for granted. I learnt my lesson the hard way. This game humbles you real quickly. I've learnt my lesson.
Cameron Gannon (Seattle Orcas): Feels great. Just nice to get off to a great start in the tournament. Again a great crowd - the enthusiasm has been great. It's been outrageous. It's always challenging playing a lineup like that. We've all seen guys like Wadey, Finchy and Stoiny scoring runs like that. Today we just tried to be smart and use the facilities and it worked out for us. So far we've had a really good balance with the way we've structured our team and the way we've performed. I haven't been a part of too many teams which have gotten on from day one like this one. (On his role with the ball) Invariably it's hitting the wicket as hard as you can and as the game goes on, just changing your pace. It's been good (playing here in Dallas). It's hard cricket. Having six overseas players in each team just lifts the standards so much. It's been really fun.
Match Summary: Seattle Orcas beat San Francisco Unicorns by 35 runs.
A chase that promised so much but alas, failed to deliver as far as the San Francisco Unicorns were concerned. Their bowlers did really well at the death to pull it back and keep the Seattle Orcas under 180 on a pitch that seemed pretty good for batting. The way they got off the blocks in the powerplay, it seemed as though this target was certainly within sights.
Matthew Wade and Finn Allen wasted no time in asserting themselves with the latter in particular taking the bull by the horns. He took a real liking to Wayne Parnell, carting him for 22 runs off the third over and the Unicorns certainly seemed like they meant business. That was until a moment of poor awareness cost Allen dearly as he strolled across for a run before his bat was stuck into the turf, resulting in his run out. And it all just came apart for the Unicorns thereafter.
Wade dragged one back onto his stumps before the run-rate slowed down as Aaron Finch and Marcus Stoinis were kept quiet by the spinners. Both looked to break free but perished in the process, sending the asking rate up as well as a result. It was down to Corey Anderson and Shadab Khan to rescue them yet again but with the southpaw holing out, it all came down to Shadab to get the job done.
A couple of chances went down on the park but they weren't the easiest to be fair. Most other opportunities were converted and the Orcas were completely switched on. Their left-arm spinners were outstanding while the seamers did well to use the tennis ball bounce in the surface to great effect. Shadab simply needed someone to hang in there with him but with his colleagues displaying poor shot selection as they looked to go big, he was left high and dry.
Cameron Gannon then wrapped things up with three wickets in the 18th over - each of those resulting in a Quinton de Kock catch - as he tucked the batters for room and gave them nothing to work it. It was one-way traffic post Allen's wicket and that lapse cost his team so dearly, resulting in a resounding win for the Orcas. Stick around for the presentation!
Magnificent! Simply magnificent from Quinton de Kock and he pulls off a spectacular catch to draw the curtains down on this contest. The Orcas go back-to-back and surge to the top of the table.
17.5 Cameron Gannon to Carmi le Roux, PLUCKS OUT A STUNNER! What a way to finish the game and Quinton de Kock has pulled off something magnificent here! Short of a length outside the off stump as le Roux fends at it from his crease. Takes the edge and flies to the South African's right as he dives one-handed and holds onto a scorcher. Magnificent stuff and that's the game - Seattle Orcas win by 35 runs!
