This is Dwaipayan Mukherjee, signing off with my co-commentator, Rajarshi Das. Take care everyone!
There is plenty of Under 19 World Cup action still going on with Pakistan marching towards a fighting victory against Ireland and the Windies inflicting another loss for the Zimbabwe boys. But allow us to call it a time for today.
So this win puts the Indian boys in firm contention for a semi-final berth. They have a couple of days to rest before they take on their neighbours, Nepal on Friday. That will be their last match before the knockout phases. VVS Laxman and his boys would also have an eye out on the other group and their top performers who can be their potential rivals during the semi-finals. It promises to be a granstand finish.
Uday Saharan, India Under 19s captain: (On the injury scare during warm-up at the innings break) I was trying to catch a ball and it hit me on my face. We are performing very well and we are playing with a good mindset. We executed our plans and Musheer played a really good innings. I don’t need to motivate the guys, we all are in a good frame of mind and everyone is playing their role perfectly. Raj bowled very well and we knew that spinners will good assistance from the surface.
Oscar Jackson, New Zealand Under 19s captain: Defitinely a tough game, we were pleased that we bowled well in the back end as restricted them to around 290. We though that was pretty par on this surface but unfortunately, we didn’t bat well. We are not building partnetships in the last few days, the batters need to bat longer. It didn’t much, it was similar throughout the day.
Musheer Khan is the Player Of The Match! Here's what he has to say: The feeling of having scored 2 hundreds is good. The thing is to keep doing the same going forward. There's an injection of confidence going ahead once they score a hundred. The wicket is a bit slow here, our bowlers are doing great, they are in good flow. And so, the results are coming about. Bhaiya (Sarfaraz) called yesterday regarding his own selection in the Indian team as well, there was a lot of happiness. I focus on a normal process, keeping it on a length. I bowl as per the requirements of the team - be it looking to pick up wickets or stopping the flow of runs.
India Under 19s (295/8) defeat New Zealand Under 19s (81) by 214 runs.
Oscar Jackson - 19 (38) | Zac Cumming - 16 (26) Saumy Pandey - 4/19 | Musheer Khan - 2/10
If you collect the top 5 one-sided matches at the U-19 level and compare all of them, there are high chances that you pick this one as the most skewed result. The Indian bowlers never allowed anything to the New Zealand batters who kept departing after making brief appearances to the batting crease. It has been another comprehensive outing for the boys of VVS Laxman and the Indian legend would be quite satisfied with not only the fact that they have won in such an assertive manner but their performances look to improve with every passing match.
The opening spell by Raj Limbani was reminiscent of Deepak Chahar who swung around the ball. 296 demanded quality from the New Zealand batters but wickets fell at reckless abandon. The ploy to bring Saumy Pandey as the opening bowling partner to Limbani worked as the left arm finished with fine figures of 4 for 19 from his 10 overs as he goes to become the joint-highest wicket-taker of the tournament, alongside Ubaid Shah, the express pace from Pakistan - both of whom have 12 scalps each to his name.
There were 5 bowlers used by Uday Saharan and all of them shared the spoils between them. Naman Tiwari picked up a wicket that takes him to 8 wickets for the tournament, only behind the duo of his colleague Pandey and Ubaid Shah. Musheer Khan decided he has more to contribute in the match as he picked up the last wicket that caps off a wonderful day for him.
Arshin Kulkarni focused on his line and lengths which got him a wicket. For New Zealand, they have been brushed aside and they would be slightly embarrassed with this outing. No batter reached the individual score of 20. Captain Jackson was the highest scorer with just 19 as no one could get a hold of the onslaught that came their way from the Indian bowling group.
This win takes the Indian side to the top of the table in their group. They have batted first in all the matches that they have played so far and the next challenge that they would like to see is how they fare once they are asked, or consciously make the decision to chase scores in what has been a very dominating few weeks for their batters.
The post-match presentation reactions follow shortly.
28.1 Musheer Khan to Ewald Schreuder, BOWLS HIM! That will be that! The attempted leg stump yorker from Musheer - he fired this one in. Schreuder had a wild hack across the line, swung all around it, and the ball went on to clatter onto leg stump! India take the honours by a mammoth 214 runs!
Ewald Schreuder b Musheer Khan 7 (17b, 1x4, 0x6)
Only the final rites left as New Zealand are facing down the barrel.
