With this victory, Mumbai Indians qualify for the top-three spot. On the other end of the spectrum is Gujarat Giants, who are languishing at the bottom of the table with their chances looking bleak.
What a humdinger of a game, with the fortunes shifting from one side to the other. Harmanpreet Kaur was finally the difference between the two sides. Gujarat Giants would be disappointed, having seen the game slip away from their hands, but sometimes, you have just got to hand it to the opposition when someone plays an innings of this class.
Harmanpreet Kaur (Mumbai Indians captain & Player of the Match): It was a very big game. We had to win because we did not want to put pressure on us. Out bowling plan did not work, but we knew that we had a long batting lineup. Last time we missed that (top spot), this time we have our eyes on that. Yesterday, I spoke to Himanshu bhayya, who I work with for my batting. He told me to trust myself. I have to stay there and look for a big innings. They (openers) are experienced and when you are chasing, it's clear how much you need to score. Good thing is that we didn't lose any wickets in the powerplay. So later on, we could keep rotating and look for bowlers to attack. 19th over was something we had to target so that we don't keep much for the final over.
Yastika Bhatia: Wicket in the second innings lot a little slower so I wanted to play straight and minimise the risk as much as possible. Yeah we discussed that it was a good platform we had built. Till the next strategic time out hope to get 8 or 9. That is what we discussed. It was a masterclass from Harry di. Really enjoyed the innings. Very happy for her. All times we felt that we had to be at our best. There were some nerves but I think Harry di just killed it. I really enjoyed today. Like I said, more of playing good cricketing shots.
Beth Mooney (Gujarat Giants captain): Yeah but in T20 cricket you really have to bowl well. 190 was a good score but not enough after the start we go. Credit goes to Mumbai, they batted brilliantly. TK and Ashu bowled beautifully. Defending a 49-metre boundary is difficult. MI batted beautifully and took it on. I think there are still a lot of positives to take from today. Certainly from the batting perspective, we are clicking. Some good shots have been played on good balls but we have conceded a few boundaries in the middle. She is a great character and hits the ball very cleanly. She made my job so easy. She said she loves batting with me.
Mumbai Indians win by 7 wickets with one ball to spare!
10:56 p.m. IST: If one thing was common in the two innings tonight, it was the turn of tides in favour of Mumbai Indians after the second strategic timeout. Gujarat Giants were on top of the game in both innings, but Mumbai Indians stormed back in the latter half, first with the ball and then with the bat to bag an unlikely victory in the end.
It was all Yastika Bhatia at the outset. Matthews found it difficult to get going while Bhatia found the fence regularly. Harmanpreet Kaur also took her time to settle in. She scored less than run a ball in the first 21 deliveries that she faced. The dot balls were piling up and the required rate had reached 14.8 runs an over by the time Yastika Bhatia was dismissed for 49.
Then what we saw was a truly special innings from Harmanpreet Kaur. She scored 30 runs in the next 12 deliveries to bring up her half-century. The explosion post that was something that the Giants found too hot to handle. Kaur hit boundaries at will, also hitting the longest six of the tournament. Her innings of 95* helped Mumbai chase down the highest total ever in the history of WPL, also helping the side Qualify in the process.
Ashleigh Gardner and Tanuja Kanwar were the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat Giants. Kanwar conceded just 21 runs in her spell tonight. Gardner had given away just 9 runs in her first three overs, but the onslaught in the final over by Kaur somewhat spoilt her figures.
Mumbai Indians win! Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur plays an innings to remember to take them home!
19.5 Ashleigh Gardner to Harmanpreet Kaur, Mumbai Indians gets home with a delivery to spare. Fuller-length down leg and she paddles it away towards the short fine leg region for a single. MI win by 7 wickets. What a blinder of a knock this has been from the MI skipper.
19.4 Ashleigh Gardner to Amelia Kerr, Amelia Kerr comes down the track and clips away the length delivery on the pads, towards the square leg region for a single. Harmanpreet is on 94. Can she finish it off with a six?
