Commentary

So despite the series ending in a draw, Bangladesh would be the much happier side here, coming to New Zealand and finally breaking their unbeaten run in home tests after about five years. This was also the first victory for the defending WTC champions in the 2021-23 cycle. Lots of positives for the visitors from the series, especially with the likes of Liton Das and Ebadot Hossain rising to the occasion under tough conditions. New Zealand on the other hand, were back to destroying their opponents at home after some sort of an aberration in the first test.

Ross Taylor getting a perfect farewell moment would still be the moment of the series. Getting to bowl in his final test and taking the very last wicket is something that will be etched to his memory forever.

Tom Latham (New Zealand captain): It was the ideal thing to do. To come out and put up this performance. Our aim was to put pressure from both ends and we successfully did so. We did a good job of putting up a huge first-inning total. It's all about figuring out how to get about in various conditions. It is critical that we be adaptable. In the first Test, we weren't quite there, and credit to Bangladesh. The fast bowlers continue to step up. That's what you want as a captain. On a tired pitch, the bowlers performed did a fantastic job. Ross Taylor arrived and snatched the last wicket. He's been there for 17 years and is a valuable component of the team.

Mominul Haque (Bangladesh captain): We were happy in the first test match but very disappointed here. I believe it was difficult for us to maintain our momentum. Unfortunately, we were unable to do so. While playing overseas, we must have a positive attitude at all times. Despite losing the second Test, there are definitely things to draw away. Liton was amazing, it looked like he was batting on a completely different surface.

Devon Conway (Player of the series): Certainly very happy with the way things went. Especially considering that I was out before the series started. Happy to contribute once more. It was tough and I was worried about getting hit on the hand. Some time in the middle allowed me time to overcome the fear of getting hit on the hand. You always want to do well. It's about adjusting your game plan as best as possible. Nice to build that partnership with Tom. We were faced with a different surface here at the Hagley. Ross Taylor has been very important for me. He has played a number of Tests, so experience. You can't buy that knowledge. He's just a great bloke to be around. We will miss him a lot in the change room.

Tom Latham (Player of the Match): It's obviously nice. We came here one nil down. To put a performance like that on the board was outstanding. We spoke about improving on things and I'm glad we did that. Getting put in on day one on a wicket we traditionally know does a little bit early on. Getting through that first hour and first session to build partnerships throughout the innings was important. We know getting a good total in the first innings are important and contributing to that was ideal. I have never felt more pressure to ask Ross to bowl, and also for a catch. I asked the bowlers to create the opportunity so it was nice to take them. You know home conditions better than other grounds around the country. Always playing at the Hagley. Always some good pace and bounce here to sure. Nice to contribute to the game.

Time to hear from the man of the moment, Ross Taylor: I suppose if you bowl in those situations, you will get a wicket. I thought we played fantastically well. Bangladesh put us under pressure at times. Probably a fair reflection of the series. I wanted to finish with a win. The way we came out and bowled to put them under pressure put us in good stead. It was an emotional day for me, my family and my teammates. I was thinking about coming back in tomorrow and warming up. It got quite flat out there, so they wanted me to chuck it up and Tom said it's the most pressure he felt throughout the game. It's always a pleasure to represent the country.

That'll be the end of this test match and the test series! New Zealand after facing a shocking defeat in the first test, bounce back strongly and level the series beating Bangladesh by an innings and a 117 runs. Bangaldesh after winning the toss and opting to field, did not make the most of the conditions. They could only take one wicket on the first day. Conway got to his ton while skipper Latham got to the giant score of 252.

New Zealand declared with 521 runs on the board and made an instant mockery of the Bangaldeshi batting lineup. They were bowled out for 126 at stumps on day two with Trent Boult taking a five-wicket haul and reaching his 300th test wicket. Southee and Jamieson combined for the other five wickets.

Wagner was wicketless on day two but he made sure that he had enough impact in the 3rd innings and took three crucial wickets. Jamieson was still the pick of the bowlers today, bagging four scalps. Liton Das played one of the finest knocks by a Bangladeshi batter, scoring 102 at a very healthy strike rate against a quality bowling attack.

However, the moment of the test match was the ending. Ross Taylor was given the ball with New Zealand being nine down. The veteran in his last test match, got the final wicket off his final delivery in test cricket, getting a fitting end to his test career, retiring as one of New Zealand's greatest ever.
