The series finale is upon us, but if you look at the series as a whole, it's pretty much been a dull ride. New Zealand dominated the first two games. They had a slip-up in the third but made up for it big time in the fourth, sealing the series. Pakistan had a celebratory moment when they won the third game, but that didn't last too long with the following game squashing all their hopes of a come-from-behind series win.
And it is a fitting venue that hosts the series finale - the Sky Stadium in Wellington. Off late, the stadium hasn't been used all that much, but a game that sees the Black Caps play T20Is for the last time this summer could be an exciting incentive to pull the crowds in. The Cake Tin, as it is colloquially called, could be in for a cracking contest here, with Pakistan looking to end this T20I series on a high and New Zealand looking to continue their domination.
Pakistan sent in a young unit with a new skipper, and there were eyes on the team to see whether they would succeed. But the whole experiment of the same seems to have badly backfired when it comes to results. As the great MS Dhoni once said, the result is secondary, the process is primary. However, neither the results nor the process are clear at this point.
Add to that, the noises surrounding the exclusion of some of the first-team stars seems to have grown louder. The questions asked about Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Naseem Shah's absence seem to be increasing day by day. There have been questions even on Shaheen Afridi's quality of performances in the recent past, with the pacer not being able to deliver like he used to do.
Hasan Nawaz and Mohammad Haris as a pair have only clicked once throughout the series. To put this in perspective, only one out of their four opening partnerships has produced ten runs or more. The middle order, barring Agha Salman, hasn't shown much promise as well, with Usman Khan being a player they could try in the last game.
The bowlers have been taken to the cleaners, with 200 being scored in two of the four games, batting first. The Kiwis made a mockery of the totals posted by Pakistan, who seem to have no answers to the batters' questions. Shaheen, Abbas Afridi, and Haris Rauf need to put an act on soon, and so do Abrar Ahmed and Shadab Khan, both of whom have been very expensive on the tour. Sufiyan Muqeem, who is on the bench, could get a go in the contest.
As for New Zealand, they made a couple of changes in the team from the game at Eden Park, and that seems to have worked well for them. They would want to stick to it although with the series sealed, they might just hand an opportunity to Tim Robinson, who featured in the series opener alone. Their bowling and batting have both clicked, and so has their fielding which makes them a well-rounded and fearsome unit to face.
If not for the defiance by Abdul Samad, New Zealand would have skittled Pakistan yet again for a total under 100 inside ten days. Zakary Foulkes, Jacob Duffy, and Will O'Rourke form a solid trioka that can get wickets in the powerplay, middle, or end overs. Expect no changes to this combination with the first two in particular proving to be a handful all series.
Their batting has been in fine touch as well. There were complaints about how the middle order hadn't stepped up but after a little collapse, skipper Michael Bracewell and Daryl Mitchell rose to the occasion steered the Kiwis away from trouble. Finn Allen and Tim Seifert continued their way of opening with a bang, and they will be expected to do so yet again should they both feature and not be rested.
One last time then this series to watch two teams who will be giving in every inch they have got and ensure that they end this series on a huge high. Momentum ahead of the one-dayers is another key factor and neither team would want to let that opportunity slip away!
