Commentary

Well, that ends the proceedings of the first Test between New Zealand and South Africa. So it took New Zealand two days and a session to record a thumping win over South Africa and end their 18-year drought.

New Zealand captain won the toss and opted to bowl first. In the first innings, the New Zealand bowlers showed their magic. And one bowler just ripped apart South Africa batting order. Matt Henry picked 7/23 as South Africa were bowled out cheaply on just 95.

Then New Zealand were helped to a huge total of 482 in their first innings thanks to Henry Nicholls' hundred and a 96 from Tom Blundell. South African bowlers could not repeat what New Zealand bowling attack did. Three South African pacers, Kagiso Rabada, Glenton Stuurman and Duanne Olivier ended up conceding more than 100 runs in their spells. New Zealand ended up with a commanding lead of 387.

South Africa were expected to bat better in their second innings. But yet again New Zealand pace attack stamped its authority! This time it was Tim Southee's turn to be amongst the wickets. The veteran pacer picked his 14th five-for in Test and completed 200 wickets in New Zealand to stun South Africa. The visitors struggled to go past 100 and were bowled out on 111 as New Zealand completed a commanding win by an innings and 276 runs.

Tim Southee: This is satisfying. It was clinical three days from everyone. It good to be the top wicket-taker in New Zealand. It is special to go past Sir Richard Hadlee.

Southee picks his 5th wicket in the innings and completes his 14th five-for in Test to wrap things up for New Zealand. New Zealand win the Test by an innings and 276 runs. New Zealand end their 18-year wait to win a Test against South Africa. And they could not have asked for a better venue to end this wait. New Zealand have enjoyed playing at Hagley Oval in the recent past. This is New Zealand third successive innings win at Hagley Oval.
