Shafali Verma (India captain): It was really a very flat wicket, they hit very well, and credit to them. I was forced to change the field, I was under pressure as a captain a little bit. I was pegging my bowlers and asking them to be confident. It's a really good experience playing here. I am very confident to bowl and I am enjoying bowling.

Oluhle Siyo (South Africa captain): I think the girls did well with the bat. Well played India, really well batted by them. We hope we win the next game. A lot of hard work, lot of learning took place. Lot of refocusing, especially us batters and it paid of today for most of the us. It's good to see the plans coming off. Simone Laurens led from the front, she was fantastic. The bowlers should have been a little more disciplined, hopefully we come out stronger in the next game. Great support and we loved every bit of it.

Shweta Sehrawat has been adjudged the Player of the Match for her blistering knock of 92 off just 57 deliveries! Here's what she has to say: The talk we had in the dressing room was to accelerate in the beginning, didn't work all that well for me for Shafali got us off to a good start but then covered it up later. Yes, this is my best T20 innings so far. I try to score quickly at the start but the plan with Shafali is to bat longer, ensure we take the game deep and stay as long as possible in the middle

At the halfway stage, South Africa would have been confident of defending the score of 166 but with the likes of Shafali Verma in the opposition rank, it was always going to be a tall ask and it turned out in a similar fashion. Riding on the back of a splendid 16 ball 45 by Shafali Verma and a brilliant half-century by Shweta Sehrawat, India have managed to coast to the victory target with 7 wickets in hand and 21 balls remaining.

India started off in a blazing fashion courtesy of their skipper Shafali Verma. She was partnered well by Sehrawat as both found the boundaries on a consistent basis. The final over of the powerplay proved to be a game-changer for India as Shafali smashed Nthabiseng Nini for 26 runs, including 5 fours and a six.

At 70/0, India was well in the driver’s seat but South Africa knew they could break open the game if they got the wicket of Shafali. Maine Smith bagged the prized wicket to pull things back for South Africa but Sehrawat and Gongadi Trishan, the next batter coming in had other ideas. They didn’t allow the required rate to creep up and continued the onslaught.

Sehrawat went onto reach a well-deserved half-century and kept finding the boundaries on a consistent basis. Trisha was dismissed after scoring 15 off 11 deliveries but there was no stopping Sehrawat. She kept playing with the field and didn’t allow any bowler to settle in. She eventually remained unbeaten on 92 off just 57 deliveries, which was studded with 20 fours.

Earlier in the day, it was South Africa who won the toss and opted to bat. They put up a challenging score of 166 on the back of a special knock from Simone Laurens. She started off in a rollicking fashion, smashing boundaries for fun. Elandri Rensburg also got off to a flyer as South Africa raced off to 56 in the first 4 overs.

The Indian spinners bowled well in the middle overs. Shafali Verma took the onus on herself to take the wickets and she bagged two to squeeze South Africa. Laurens was eventually dismissed on 61 off 44 deliveries while the lower order also struck some crucial boundaries to get their side to a competitive score. It proved way too less in the end as India chased it down quite comfortably.

16.3 Madison Landsman to Shweta Sehrawat, FOUR! INDIA WIN THE TOURNAMENT OPENER! Fittingly Sehrawat hits the winning runs as India thrash South Africa here. Short on the fourth stump, rocks back and thumped it just past the diving extra-cover fielder, races to the fence for a boundary.
