Commentary

So that will be all. The first ODI promised a lot but ends as a damp squib even as both teams have a lot of positives to take out of it. Which of them will come out on top in the 2nd ODI then on Monday at this very venue? Do join us to find out the same right here on Sportskeeda while we hope the weather will be a lot better too. For the moment, this is the duo of Rajarshi Das and Sooryanarayanan Sesha calling it a night. Have a cracking Sunday tomorrow - good night and take care!

Match abandoned due to rain. The 3-match series remains placed at 0-0.

Quite a disappointment considering that a cracking second half was in store. Sri Lanka had to fight hard to get to 273 and it was thanks to vice-captain Charith Asalanka's sensational century that they managed to do so even as Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama made useful contributions of their own.

Zimbabwe would have backed themselves to chase it down but they were rocked early on as Dilshan Madushanka nipped two wickets in the bud to send Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and skipper Craig Ervine back for ducks. While Kamunhukamwe didn't move his feet and played the ball back onto his stumps, Ervine chased one outside the off stump and nicked off to the slip cordon.

Dushmantha Chameera bowled brilliantly himself, generating movement while extracting sharp bounce off the surface. Sri Lanka were on top although one big partnership would have put the Chevrons back on track. Of course, there was the small matter of watching a certain Sikandar Raza bat too against the spin threat of Jeffrey Vandersay and Maheesh Theekshana. But all that will have to wait until Monday now with a light drizzle and lightning halting play post which we couldn't see a resumption.

9:18 PM local time: The inevitable has happened. The match has been abandoned. It was far too long a delay in the first place and with the rain not relenting, there was no other option but to call off the game.

8:50 PM local time: It's still raining in Colombo. The cutoff time for a 20-over chase is 10:10 PM local time. Considering the time that will be needed for the ground staff to get the field fit for play, it must stop raining real soon else it could be curtains for today!

8:25 PM local time: The wait continues. We've started losing overs alright and we continue to hope in anticipation of some sort of a contest.

7:42 PM local time: Roshan Abeysinghe has posted a picture of the ground on X just a couple of minutes ago. The entire ground is under the covers...

7:38 PM local time: No update yet on a resumption. If this remains the case for a bit longer we might start losing overs. Keep those fingers crossed folks!

Ah shucks! The umpires are calling for the covers with some droplets of rain falling. It seems like the lightning is another matter of concern and the on-field officials have opted for the safer route. As we've come to see in this part of the world, the entire ground is set to be covered with some of the finest ground staff swinging into action. Let's hope that this is just a minor pause and no more!

Chameera is getting enough movement in the air while extracting sharp carry off the surface too. Most importantly, his line has been spot on thus far and this will please skipper Kusal Mendis.
