That is all that was written for the tournament opener of WBBL 07. It was worth the wait and given the quality of players and the skillsets they bring with them, this promises to be bigger than ever. You do not want to miss any of it going forward so do ensure to catch our coverage of the action through the competition right here on Sportskeeda, with the next set of games taking place on Saturday in what promises to be an exciting double-header. Thank you so much for tuning into our coverage of this contest - one which we hope you enjoyed as much as we did bringing it to you. Do switch tabs and keep yourselves up to date with all the other cricketing news and action from across the globe on this very platform. For now though, on behalf of my good friend and fellow textpert Pradeep Somashekar, this is Sooryanarayanan Sesha humbly requesting you to mask up and get yourselves vaccinated in case you haven't already. Goodbye and do take care!
The Sixers camp will be a happy lot tonight. They failed to make it past the league stage last season but they have hit the right chords first up in what was a rain-reduced encounter. Ellyse Perry will be a happy captain although she will be hoping for a much-improved showing with the ball from herself as well as her colleagues going forward. Very much early days in the tournament for any side to panic and so the Melbourne Stars will take the positives out of this contest - the big ones being the runs scored by Elyse Villani, as well as the exposure that some of the younger lot got in this high-voltage clash. They've got a long way to go in the tournament and will look to put this loss aside at the earliest.
Alyssa Healy (Player of the Match): It was nice to get back out here. I love playing the WBBL, especially for the Sixers. Nice to get back out there and we will take the win. (On the plan while batting with Shafali Verma) The plan was for her to get off strike, get the ones and I would get the big runs. She tried to go big and got out unfortunately but she will come good for us. You just need some luck in T20 cricket. I got run out in the last international and a peach in the test match as well as in one of the T20s (against India). Hoping to play some good cricket. The young kids have added so much already to our group. We love the energy that they bring. Shafali and Radha have fitted in nicely - Radha has been dancing around in the group and it's great to see them adjusting to our culture so quickly.
It was an entertaining contest to get things running for the competition after a frustrating rain delay and with a score of 100 ahead of them, the Sydney Sixers needed their opening duo of Shafali Verma and Alyssa Healy to get them off to a flyer. Shafali did find the going tough as she was castled for a mere 8 runs but not before she had the best seat in the house and witnessed a masterclass from Healy. The keeper-batter flayed the bowlers to all corners of the park and looked in a menacing mood while also premeditating the lines to great effect to throw the bowlers off their radar.
The Stars seemed to have no clue whatsoever to bring the Healy carnage to a halt and the likes of Tess Flintoff and Annabel Sutherland in particular found out the hard way with Healy ransacking an array of boundaries off them to reduce the equation to less than a run-a-ball. The Stars didn't let things get away all that easily though and the wickets of Ashleigh Gardner first and then Healy brought them back into the contest.
A bit of hope was raised again with the dismissal of skipper Ellyse Perry, thanks to a screamer of a catch at short mid-wicket by Anna Lanning, who was then entrusted with bowling the final over. However, with a mere two runs to defend, it was just a case of delaying the inevitable as the Sydney Sixers romped home to kickstart their campaign on a positive note.
The bowling effort from the Stars left a lot to be desired with Annabel Sutherland and Tess Flintoff taking some tap. Kim Garth was the pick of the lot with an economical spell that also saw her pick up a wicket while it was a memorable maiden wicket for Rhys McKenna, who prized out the Sixers captain Ellyse Perry. Having said that, everything that came post that belligerent bit of hitting from Alyssa Healy was all but a mere consolation for the Stars.
THAT IS THAT! Reakes seals the game with a flat-batted hit over the bowler's head to seal the deal for her side. It was inevitable considering how Alyssa Healy took off and in the end, the Sydney Sixers beat Melbourne Stars by 6 wickets with 4 deliveries to spare!
11.0
10.2 Anna Lanning to Angela Reakes, THAT'S IT! That's the winning runs for the Sixers as that Alyssa Healy's blitzkrieg of an innings blew away the Melbourne Stars. Short on the off-stump, hurried on to Reakes as she looks pull but miscues it straight down the ground and they come back for a brace, the fielder pulls that one back inside the ropes in the end.
10.1 Anna Lanning to Angela Reakes, OH! Around the wicket to start, short on the outside off and slides across the right-hander as Reakes on the backfoot looks to cut but misses.
Anna Lanning, right-arm off-break, comes into the attack to bowl the final over of the game. She will bowl around the wicket.
Fewer wickets feel more special than your very first and to prize out a certain Ellyse Perry for the same is a story that Rhys McKenna will carry with her for her lifetime. An errant throw off the final delivery has reduced the equation to a run lesser now for the Sixers and barring a horrible mishap, they should get the job done.
Sydney Sixers need 2 runs to win off the final over!
