Commentary

That finally brings us to the end our coverage for the final ODI. West Indies had their moments in the 2nd encounter but India was too good either side of that. Like always, it was a pleasure bringing all the live coverage. Hardik Pandya will collect the series trophy before he walks over towards his team. As has been the tradition with the Indian team over the years, they hand it to the least experienced member of the side - Mukesh Kumar on this occasion. He holds the trophy aloft as the entire team poses for the shutterbugs.

A series which India entered in a bid to answer a few questions ahead of the World Cup. They've got some even as a couple of them remain to be answered. The Asia Cup is next as far as the ODI format is concerned and we could well see the full contingent bound for the World Cup partake in that event. What will the composition of that side look like? Who makes the cut and who misses out? Time will tell...

As for the West Indies, they had their moments in the second game but an insipid display on either side of that is a damning reflection of why they haven't been able to make the cut for the World Cup. Plenty more questions remain to be answered as far as they are concerned although they will hope that things take a turn for the better when the T20 series commences in a couple of days' time.

Hardik Pandya (India captain): Its special. If I be very honest, I look forward to these sort of games. This was more than an international game. We knew what was at stake. The ways the boys came out and the way they enjoyed themselves. This is just what I want and want them to cherish whatever comes their way. I mean see, you know what obviously Virat and Rohit are integral part of the game, Ut was important for someone like Ritu or Axar to get a game. We wanted to check some combinations. Whatever you have, you have to go and enjoy and that is exactly what we did. Yeah it was intentional (on taking his time initially). Had a wonderful chat with Virat and the kind of inputs he gave was great. He gave some pointers. He wanted me to spend some time and get used to this format. That stayed in my mind. I wanted to spend time and carry on once I was set. Really thankful to Virat for the input. Scoring 350 was crucial. If the luck is in our side when a side is chasing a big score, it keeps going your way. West Indies woke up a bit late and took the game to the 34th over but the match was done and dusted in the powerplay iself. This is one of the nicest ground I have played here. We have to manage a lot of things when we come here. It is important for the West Indies board to understand that basic necessities are needed and how the provide the basic facilities to the players. We didn't ask for any luxurious things but this things have to be kept in mind.

Shai Hope (West Indies captain): Hindsight is the best sight. I won't change that decision (at the toss). I think we restricted them well enough but we didn't start well enough chasing. I don't think we stemmed enough balls in that 6-8 meter area. We didn't give them a challenge at the start. We're still human beings, we've got to understand that. I still thought 350 was a gettable total especially on that wicket but today just wasn't our day. Any time you cross the rope you have to believe that you can win. The key was to set the game up properly which the result showed we didn't do pretty well. Just trying to keep stressing on that attitude. I don't think we've been consistent enough with that attitude. Some days we wake up and play like some of the best teams in the world and some other days we really get steamrolled at times. Consistency is the key for us and that's what we're stressing upon in my tenure; I don't know how long it is.

Ishan Kishan is the Player of the Series for his consecutive showing. Here is what he had to say: Not so happy with the finishing. That was what my coach said that I should finish the games. Next time when I come here or whatever tournament I am playing, I will look to score big. It is very important at this level when you are getting good wickets. You have to always forget the last game and focus on one match at a time. I think he is a tremendous player, That is a plus point from the non-striker’s end. That gives the confidence to me and gives me the momentum ahead. I think its always important to win at this level. It is important how you approach the game. After getting 350, we were always positive and came out with a fire. I have played a few tournaments here. Not focusing too much on the T20 World Cup. One series can change your life and we have to think of the present rather than looking too much into the future.

Shubman Gill is the Player of the Match for his sublime knock of 85. Here's what he has to say: Very special for me. My first fifty on the tour. I was looking to get a big score for my team - hopefully a hundred but that wasn't to be. Glad the result has gone the team's way though. It was a pretty good wicket to bat on. It got a bit difficult once the ball got older and it started gripping for the spinners. At the start it was coming on nicely. It's all about playing according to the situation. As an opener it's your job to give a good start to your team and fortunately I have been able to do that. (Takeaways from the tour so far) In the last match I was set as well and was looking for a big one. I was trying to accelerate and put pressure on the bowlers. The way the one-day format is moving right now you have to keep putting pressure on the bowlers and score quickly. I just try to play my own game. I don't really think about all those external factors (absence of Kohli and Rohit). I just try to do my best.

That was a complete demolition job from the Indian bowlers as they register a massive victory by runs, to take the series 2-1. West Indies were never in the game and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The partnership between Alzardi Joseph and Gudakesh Motie did frustrate them for a while but overall, they will be very happy with the way the bowlers performed, especially the faster bowlers. Mukesh Kumar breathed fire in his opening spell and got some lateral movement which accounted for three West Indies top-order batters.

He bowled in the right channels and the shape made the batters struggle in the powerplay. Three quick wickets were followed by the introduction of Jaydev Unadkat and Shardul Thakur and both the second-change bowlers bagged two crucial wickets in their respective opening overs. Unadkat bagged his first of the tour while Shardul eventually ended with five. He deceived Hetmyer with a slower delivery before dismissing Romario Shepherd with a short delivery.

They kept staring down the barrel until some resilience from the lower order took them to a score of 151. Yannic Cariah, Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie provided some fireworks towards the final stages of the match but it had no impact on the game. Kuldeep Yadav also bowled brilliantly and bagged a couple of wickets while Thakur and Mukesh bagged 7 between them. Motie was the top scorer, remaining unbeaten on 39.

Now that should seal the deal for India. Shardul finishes the series with the most wickets. Also his best figures in ODI cricket as India trounce West Indies by 200 runs. The wait for a series win against India continues for West Indies. 17 years and they are yet to win an ODI series against them.

35.3 Shardul Thakur to Jayden Seales, KNOCKS HIM OVER! No questions about this one! Cross-seam delivery on a length from around the wicket. Angling into the off stump as Seales swings wildly. Doesn't connect though as the off stump is pegged back, bringing the curtains down on this contest for sure this time around. India take the series by a 2-1 margin courtesy a 200-run victory!
