Khamzat Chimaev, nicknamed “Borz," was born in Chechnya, Russia, on May 1, 1994, and has risen to be one of the leading MMA fighters on the UFC roster. Chimaev initially pursued a career in amateur wrestling, transitioning to mixed martial arts after tasting success in freestyle wrestling. After competing in multiple independent promotions for his first six professional fights, Chimaev joined the world's biggest MMA organization, UFC, and swiftly gained notoriety by winning two bouts in 10 days.
Khamzat Chimaev’s journey in combat sports began at the young age of 5, with wrestling. He achieved the accolade of winning a bronze medal at the Russian National Championships during his younger years. At 23, he began on his path as a professional wrestler, training at the Allstar Training Center in Stockholm, Sweden. In September 2017, he entered the world of amateur MMA fights, paving the way for his professional debut in May 2018. He attributed his relocation to Sweden to his brother Artur Chimaev, who had already settled there for better living conditions, initially visiting for medical reasons but ultimately choosing to make Sweden his permanent residence. In late 2023, Chimaev voluntarily left Sweden and made U.A.E. his new residence.
Why is Khamzat Chimaev not fighting anymore?
Khamzat Chimaev burst onto the UFC scene as a fearsome competitor with an undefeated record in the Welterweight division. However, his penchant for breaking rules and causing trouble, including missing weight significantly, and Dana White's concern for maintaining the UFC's reputation and business interests led to a break from fighting. His health issues also forced him to stay away from the octagon; however, Chimaev is braced to return to the UFC on October 26, 2024, against Robert Whittaker in a middleweight bout. He will compete after a year with Kamaru Usman as his most recent opponent, whom Chimave defeated at UFC 294 on October 21, 2023.
