The Houston Rockets is a basketball team that plays in the Western Conference in the NBA. They have clinched two NBA championships and four Western Conference titles in their history. The Rockets were established in 1967 as the ‘San Diego Rockets,’ before moving to Houston in 1971. Led by NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon, the Rockets won back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995.

Houston Rockets Famous Players

Hakeem Olajuwon

Hakeem Olajuwon is rated as the topmost player in Houston Rockets history and was drafted with the first pick in 1984. The Rockets won back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995 with Olajuwon leading the team. Over 17 seasons with the Rockets, he averaged 22.5 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. Olajuwon was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008 and has left an indelible mark on the basketball world.

Moses Malone

Moses Malone played for the Rockets between 1976 and 1982. While he was unable to win a championship in Houston, Malone was an incredible player for the franchise and a fan favorite. In six seasons for the franchise, he averaged 24.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game.

Elvin Hayes

Elvin Hayes is another Houston Rockets great who played a pivotal role in the team’s success. He was drafted first overall by the San Diego Rockets in 1968. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1990 and played with the Rockets for seven seasons. During his time with the franchise, Hayes averaged 20.6 points and 12.2 rebounds per game.

Calvin Murphy

Calvin Murphy, a true Houston Rockets legend, became a mainstay within the franchise throughout his whole 13-year NBA career. He was drafted by the San Diego Rockets in 1970 and moved to Houston whilst the group relocated in 1971. Despite not capturing an NBA championship, Murphy made plenty of valuable contributions to the Houston Rockets.

He averaged 17.9 points and 4.4 assists per game in his career. Though he only earned a single All-Star appearance in 1979 and a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1970-71, his unwavering loyalty to the Houston Rockets secures his place as one of the franchise's all-time finest players.

Clyde Drexler

Clyde Drexler is a basketball legend who played a pivotal function in the Houston Rockets' championship victory in 1994. His arrival was like finding the missing piece of a jigsaw. Drexler’s remarkable expertise earned him a spot in the NBA Hall of Fame in 2004.

During his three-plus years with the Houston Rockets, he averaged 19.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game. While his scoring skills had been the topmost, his relatively short time with the team places him slightly lower in the list of the team’s all-time greats. Nonetheless, his impact on the championship-winning squad is unforgettable.

Houston Rockets Owner

Tilman Fertitta is the owner of the Houston Rockets. He caught the eye of basketball fans and analysts in October 2017 when he purchased the Houston Rockets for $2.2 billion.

Fertitta is also the owner of the Golden Nugget Casinos and Laundry, a company known for its Texas-based restaurants and entertainment spots. Some well-known places under Laundry’s umbrella are Laundry’s Seafood House, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., and Saltgrass Steak House. Fertitta has not only made his mark within the NBA but also in the world of dining and entertainment.
