Jeff Jarrett: A Brief Biography
Jeff Jarrett is a WWE Hall of Famer, pro wrestler, and pro wrestling promoter. Widely known for his work with WWE and its rival WCW, Jarrett is known for his country music star personality. He is also the founder of NWA: TNA (Total Nonstop Action), now known as Impact Wrestling, and GFW (Globe Force Wrestling).
Jeff Jarrett Early Life
Jeffrey Leonard Jarrett was born in Hendersonville, Tennessee on July 14, 1967. He hails from a long line of wrestlers and promoters. His father Jerry Jarrett owned a pro-wrestling promotion of himself named Continental Wrestling Association, which would later be known as United States Wrestling Association.
He was involved in Basketball during his time at Goodpasture Christian School but worked alongside his father's promotion as well. At the age of 19, Jarrett was working as a referee at the Continental Wrestling Association before completing his training and making his in-ring debut.
Pro Wrestling Career
Jeff Jarrett started his wrestling career with Continental Wrestling Association, the promotion owned by his father. In the late 1980s, his father purchased World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) and merged it with his own promotion to form the USWA (United States Wrestling Association). At the same time, Jarrett also performed in promotions such as American Wrestling Association (AWA). Super World Sports (SWS) and Continental Wrestling Federation (CWF).
He was later involved in a myriad of national and international pro wrestling promotions. His wrestling breakthrough came in 1992 when he debuted in WWF. He defeated Rick Martel during his time in WWE and was booked to face Bret Hart but the match was subsequently cancelled. He left the promotion for USWA after the cancellation of the match but returned about a year later in 1993
Jeff Jarrett switched between the then WWF, and WCW multiple times in his career, and held the Intercontinental Championship in WWE 6 separate times. While he never settled in either brand, he was quite famous for the gimmick he portrayed in WWE as a Country Music Singer. Jarrett often used his guitar as a weapon while portraying this gimmick.
His time with WWE ended on a sour note, as there were allegations made that Jarrett had conspired to delay his title defense in WWE, ultimately forcing Vince McMahon to pay him $300,000 to wrestle and drop the Intercontinental Title without a contract at No Mercy.
Jeff Jarrett proved to be every bit of a wrestling promoter as his father and grandfather. He first founded J Sports and Entertainment and opened a wrestling promotion, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling or TNA in 2002. He wrestled on the roster of TNA himself and managed to get the promotion television contracts as well. In 2014, due to internal disputes within the company, he left and founded Global Force Wrestling.
Global Force Wrestling would later be bought out by Impact Wrestling (the rebranded TNA under Anthem Sports and Wrestling). However, the relationship did not last, and Jeff Jarrett parted ways with the company.
In 2018, the unexpected happened when he made his return to WWE and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. In 2022, he also started making appearances in All Elite Wrestling (AEW). He also serves as the Director of Business Development for the promotion.
