Early Life
Tama Tonga’s real name is Alipate Aloisio Leone. He was born on October 15, 1982, in Nukuʻalofa, Tonga. He and his younger brother were adopted by their aunt and her husband, the legendary wrestler Haku (also known as Meng), when they were visiting their family in 1991. This move brought them to Poinciana, Florida, where they grew up alongside their cousin Tevita (Tanga Loa), and their older sister, Vika. After high school, Tama Tonga's path took a unique turn. He enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a B-2 Spirit mechanic at Whiteman Air Force Base for six years.
Tama Tonga Professional Wrestling Career
Early Years (2008 - 2010)
Before his NJPW stardom, Tama Tonga and his brother Tevita started their wrestling journey together. They trained under their father, Haku, and a family friend, but eventually joined the Dudley Boyz's wrestling school for more practice. Debuting in late 2008 as "The Sons of Tonga," they wrestled in various promotions like Southern Championship Wrestling and World Xtreme Wrestling. They had a WWE tryout where only Tevita received a contract. Tama Tonga continued wrestling under different names in other promotions before landing in NJPW in 2010.
New Japan Pro Wrestling (2010 - 2024)
Tama Tonga began his run in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in 2010. Firstly, he teamed up with Davey Richards in the 2010 Super Junior Tag Tournament, though their alliance was short-lived. In 2012, he captured his first significant NJPW title, the NEVER Openweight Championship, defeating EVIL. This victory marked the first of four NEVER Openweight Championship reigns for Tonga.
In 2014, Tama Tonga co-founded Bullet Club alongside Bad Luck Fale, Karl Anderson, and Prince Devitt (later known as Finn Balor). With their over-the-top entrances, disrespectful antics, and high-octane matches, Bullet Club redefined professional wrestling and became one of the most popular factions in all of professional wrestling. Arguably, Tonga's greatest success in NJPW came alongside his real-life brother, Tevita (Tanga Loa). Together, they were known as Guerrillas of Destiny (G.O.D.). G.O.D. accumulated an impressive seven IWGP Tag Team Championship reigns, battling legendary teams like The Young Bucks, The Briscoe Brothers, and Suzuki-gun in unforgettable matches.
Tonga worked his way out of the Bullet Club Civil War in 2018 and went back to Tag Team Gold ways in 2019. In 2022, he gradually exited from The Bullet Club and won the NEVER Openweight Championship as a singles wrestler in 2023. He left the company in 2024.
WWE (2024 - Present)
At WrestleMania 38 Night Two, Roman Reigns lost his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship to Cody Rhodes, following which he and The Rock went on a hiatus. A night earlier, Jimmy Uso lost to his brother Jey Uso. On SmackDown after WrestleMania, Solo Sikoa criticized Uso for his defeat and kicked him out of the Bloodline. Uso was then attacked by Tama Tonga, who made his official WWE debut as a member of The Bloodline.
