Tennis sensation Qinwen Zheng was born on October 8, 2002, and achieved her career-high singles ranking of No. 5 (current ranking) in November 2024 after her powerhouse performance at the 2024 WTA Finals. With her determination, she reached her maiden WTA Finals by defeating top-rank players such as Barbora Krejcikova, Jasmine Paolini and Elena Rybakina en route. Despite putting up a strong fight against Gauff, Zheng ultimately fell short, losing in a thrilling three-set match. For finishing runner-up she will receive a prize money of $2.3 million.

She has won four singles WTA titles to date, including the 2024 Japan Open, 2023 Palermo Ladies Open and the 2023 Zhengzhou Open. At the 2024 Japan Open, she defeated Sofia Kenin in the final. Zheng defeated Donna Vekic in the final and Iga Swiatek in the semifinals at the 2024 Paris Olympics to win the gold medal in the singles category.

Her best Grand Slam performance includes reaching the final of the 2024 Australian Open after defeating first-time semifinalist Dayana Yastremska in the semifinals. As a result, the tennis sensation became the fourth player from China to reach the semifinals after Zheng Jie, Li Na and Peng Shuai. However, she lost to the defending champions and No. 2 in the world, Aryna Sabalenka, in straight sets, 6-3 6-2. She became the second player after Li Na to reach a Grand Slam final.

Zheng was awarded the 2022 WTA Newcomer of the Year award after winning one Challenger title and eight ITF singles titles. She recently reached the quarterfinal of the 2024 Dubai Tennis Championships and the 2024 Italian Open, where she lost to World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff, respectively.

For her remarkable performance, Qinwen Zheng received the 2023 Most Improved Player award. She made her debut at the 2024 United Cup and helped China reach the quarterfinals, where they lost to eventual champion Poland.

Zheng’s playing style can be described as an aggressive baseliner who likes to take the ball early and control points from the baseline. She also has a good first serve and can generate heavy topspin from both wings.
