On February 9, 2024, WWE announced the launch of a new weekly video series titled WWE Speed on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). Initially, the concept involved matches with a five-minute time limit. However, WWE commentator Corey Graves revealed on March 27, 2024, that the show would premiere on April 3rd with a revised format featuring three-minute matches. An eight-person single-elimination tournament was announced to crown the inaugural WWE Speed Champion. This tournament would unfold over the first few episodes of the program.
Inaugural WWE Speed Champion Tournament
The inaugural champion is currently being determined through the aforementioned eight-person tournament broadcasted on WWE Speed. The first episode, which aired on April 3, 2024, showcased Ricochet defeating Dragon Lee in the opening round. A second episode followed shortly after, featuring Bronson Reed emerging victorious against Cedric Alexander. JD McDonagh defeated Axiom and Johnny Gargano defeated Angel to advance further in the tournament. In the second round, Ricochet defeated McDonagh and Bronson Reed defeated Johnny Gargano to punch their tickets into the tournament finals. In the finals, it was Ricochet who became the first-ever WWE Speed Champion.
