Anthony Edwards: A Brief Biography
Anthony Edwards is an American professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA. He played college basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Edwards played football until the age of ten before transitioning to basketball after seeing his brothers play the sport. He was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the first overall choice in the 2020 NBA Draft and was an NBA All-star reserve in the 2022-23 season.
Early life
He played the shooting guard position and started playing for Therrell high school, but he transferred to Holy Spirit Preparatory School after his success. At the end of his senior season, Edwards was averaging 29 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. He was rated a five-star recruit by major recruiting agencies and went on to play in the McDonald's all-American game and the Jordan Brand Classic.
Anthony Edwards committed to Georgia because he wanted to play for coach Tom Crean, who coached two of his favorite players Dwyane Wade and Victor Oladipo. In his debut, he scored 24 points, nine rebounds, and four steals in a 91–72 win over Western Carolina. It was the most points by a Georgia freshman debutant since Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Dominique Wilkins in 1979. He scored a season-high 37 points, including 33 in the second half, and posted six rebounds, four steals, and three blocks in a 93–85 loss to third-ranked Michigan State at the Maui Invitational.
As a freshman, Edwards averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. He was the leading scorer for the team and was the top scorer nationally as well. Anthony Edwards earned the SEC freshman of the year award and was selected to all SEC 2nd team. He was also the finalist for the Jerry West award, which recognizes the best collegiate shooting guard.
NBA Journey
Edwards declared for the NBA draft and was selected first overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2020 NBA draft. In his debut match, Edward played only for 25 minutes and scored 15 points along with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. He then played his career-high 42 points game against the Phoenix Suns and became the third youngest to do so in NBA history. Thus, Edwards was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
The young guard for the Timberwolves added his name to the list of individuals scoring 2000 points in his first 100 games at the age of 20 or younger. In April 2022, Edwards played in his first playoff game, against the Memphis Grizzlies and in Game 1 he finished with 36 points and 6 assists. Despite playing well in the playoffs Timberwolves were out of the playoffs and in Jan. In 2023 Edwards was selected as the NBA All-star reserve.

After scoring 42 points against the Phoenix Suns, he became the third youngest player to record a 40* points game in NBA history.
By scoring 10 three-pointers in a game, Edwards also set an NBA record for being the youngest player ever.
By scoring the stat line of at least 40 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals, and 5 three-pointers in a single game he became the first player to do so in NBA history.
He also became the fourth player to have scored at least 2,000 points, 400 rebounds, and 300 assists in his first 100 career games, joining LeBron James, Blake Griffin, and Luka Donic.
Family
Anthony Edwards was born to Yvette Edwards and Roger Caruth. He spent his early childhood in Atlanta, Georgia. His mother Yvette and grandmother both died of cancer on the 5th day of different months and hence, he wore the No. 5 jersey in honor of both of them. Edwards was brought up by his sister Antoinette and brother Antoine. Moreover, Edwards routinely served as an instructor at several youth camps while he was in high school. He also has a girlfriend named Jeanine Robel and they have both been together since before Edwards entered the NBA.
