He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on 5th August 2001. In his early childhood, Edwards played youth football for the Atlanta Vikings. It was during the ninth grade that Edwards started playing basketball under the training of Justin Holland, a former college basketball player.
Edwards spent his college career playing for the Georgia Bulldogs, winning the 2020 SEC Rookie of the Year award.
