The PGA Tour's signature event, the Travelers Championship, has been held at the TPC River Highlands since 1984 and is managed by the Greater Hartford Community Foundation. In the past 10 years, longer hitters have performed well at the tournament: Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Hunter Mahan, J. J. Henry, and Phil Mickelson have combined for six wins.
Under Buick's sponsorship, the 2006 competition had a purse of $4.4 million, with the winner taking home $792,000. Under Travelers' sponsorship, the purse was $6 million from 2007 to 2010, with $1,080,000 going to the winner.
The 2024 Travelers Championship will commence on June 17 and conclude on June 23. The event, being a signature event, has a purse of $20 million, with $3.6 million as the winner's share.
The Players Choice Award, which is determined by PGA Tour members based on factors such as services, hospitality, attendance, and course condition, was given to the Travelers Championship in 2018 for the second year in a row. Due to the Summer Olympics, the event was moved to August in 2016, but it returned to June in 2017.
In the 2023 season, the Travelers Championship was won by Keegan Bradley, with a record score of 257, under 23, which is the lowest in the event's 72-year-old history. He defeated Zac Blair and Brian Harman by three strokes and won $3.6 million in the winner's share.
Travelers Championship 2024 History
Originally named the Insurance City Open, the event was established 72 years ago, in 1952. In 1967, it was renamed the Greater Hartford Open, a moniker it kept until 2003. The GHO was also named after entertainer Sammy Davis Jr., who performed frequently in the pro-ams from 1973 to 1988.
From 1985 to 2002, Canon served as the event's title sponsor. As a result, many of its staff members would assist throughout the tournament week by taking time off work. From 2004 to 2006, Buick served as the title sponsor; in 2007, The Travelers Companies took over.
The Wethersfield Country Club, located roughly five miles (8 km) north, served as the tournament's home field for the first 30 years. When the PGA Tour acquired and renovated Edgewood Country Club in 1984, the competition relocated to the newly constructed TPC of Connecticut in Cromwell.
The course was entirely rebuilt with nine new holes in 1991, and it was renamed the TPC at River Highlands. It was the third championship golf course in the future network of more than 30 TPC clubs to be owned and operated by the PGA Tour.
The organizers feared the tournament would lose its place on the tour for the 2003 season if a replacement sponsor could not be found when Canon declared it would not renew its sponsorship following the 2002 season. But Buick came forward and signed a three-year deal for sponsorship.
However, Buick's decision to not extend its sponsorship following the 2006 season resulted in the tournament's temporary removal from the tour schedule, with consideration given to a "less prestigious" position on the Champions Tour. Finally, a position became available, and Traverls agreed to sponsor the event; as per their most recent contract, they will be sponsoring the event till 2030.
