That’s a wrap on this historic game! What a thrilling display from the Melbourne Renegades, rewriting the record books in style. It’s been a pleasure bringing you all the action from this unforgettable chase. This is Meeth Agrawal signing off alongside my co-commentator, Rudransh!
Melbourne Renegades won by 9 wickets (with 17 balls to spare)
An absolute masterclass from Melbourne Renegades as they storm to the highest successful run chase in WBBL history, smashing their own record from 2019 with ease! Chasing a mammoth 186, they reached the target in just 17.1 overs, with nine wickets in hand, in what might be one of the most dominant wins we've seen in the league.
From the get-go, the Renegades' chase looked unstoppable. Captain Hayley Matthews and Courtney Webb took charge, launching into the Adelaide bowlers with an aggressive 89-run opening stand that had the Strikers on the back foot. Just as Webb had to retire hurt with a calf strain and a potential shift in momentum seemed likely, Alice Capsey’s wicket briefly raised the Strikers' hopes.
However, little did they know what was about to hit them. That was when Deandra Dottin arrived, and she didn’t just change the game, she tore it wide open. Teaming up with her fellow West Indian Matthews, Dottin blazed to 46 off only 18 balls at a jaw-dropping strike rate above 250. Meanwhile, Matthews, already impressive with the ball (2/28), brought up her highest WBBL score, an unbeaten 85 off 54. It’s rare to see a captain dominate with both bat and ball in the same game, and Matthews did it with style.
The Strikers’ bowlers, meanwhile, had an off day despite a strong showing from their batters. Tahlia McGrath top-scored with a fiery 49 off 24, while Smriti Mandhana gave them the ideal start with her quick 40 off 25. Orla Prendergast chipped in at the end, helping the Strikers post their highest total of the season, which looked enough, but Matthews and the Renegades had other ideas.
With this emphatic victory, the Renegades jump to second on the table with four wins from seven, while the defending champs, Adelaide Strikers, struggle at the bottom with only one win from six.
17.1 Madeline Penna to Hayley Matthews, FOUR! All done! Full and wide outside off, drills the drive through covers. The Renegades win by 9 wickets!
17.1 Madeline Penna to Hayley Matthews, WIDE! Full and wide down the leg, it beats Matthews and the keeper, allowing the batter take up two more!
Madeline Penna, right-arm leg break, comes into the attack
Deandra Dottin survived yet again in this over and this time a stumping chance. And well, she made full use of that chance smashing 12 off this over.
Renegades are just few runs away from creating history.
