That brings us to the end of a rather one sided contest in the end with CSK winning by a big margin of 63 runs. The defending champions have started off their campaign in a resounding fashion and will look to just keep building on this momentum. Meanwhile there is a lot to work on for the Gujarat Titans. The defeat will certainly put a few doubts on their minds especially due to the manner in which they lost. The IPL carnival continues with the Sunrisers Hyderabad slated to square off against the five time champions Mumbai Indians tomorrow. Join us then but for now this is me (Arya Sekhar Chakraborty) bidding adieu also on behalf of my fellow commentator Shaswat Kumar.
Shivam Dube (Player of the Match): This franchise is something different. They have given me the freedom. They want me to do better and I also want to win games for this franchise. I have worked in that way. I know they will me short balls and I am ready for that. Yeah they want the same thing from me like what I did today.
Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings captain): Great to know. It was a near-perfect game for us. A team against Gujarat always challenge you and it was great to come up with a performance like this. In Chennai when you are not sure what the pitch will be, it is important to have wickets in hand. Rachin batted brilliantly in the powerplay and we were ahead in the game. Shivam played brilliantly and not to forget Rizvi. In terms of confidence, Mahi bhai and the management worked with him. He knows what kind of a role he is playing. Definitely Shivam is a big plus for us. I think pretty much same. I am very much impressed. We have got two three youngsters which might be making a difference.
Time for the post-match presentation ceremony with Sanjay Manjrekar.
MS Dhoni turned back the clock when he took an exceptional catch to send back Vijay Shankar. He dived to his right full stretched and held onto a stunner. Switch 👇 to relive that moment.
Deepak Chahar: Generally from the time I am playing, I have been asked to bowl three overs in the powerplay. It's difficult but always ready to chip in for the team. Yeah the two bouncer rule has definitely helped the fast bowlers. It creates doubts among batters. Not much for bowlers in this format so this has surely helped. If the ball is gripping you can use it to your advantage. Bounce stays there in Chennai but it stays low. There was no dew tonight. When dew comes as the tournament progress, it can get easier for the batters. Now have to keep looking at both Rutu and Mahi bhai (chuckles on being asked on whom to look for field placements).
Shubman Gill, Gujarat Titans captain: They outplayed us when they were batting. The way they bowled, their execution was spot on. We backed ourselves to get a decent score in the powerplay. Once we could not get a decent start, we were always playing catch-up. (On their bowling) In T20, you can always talk about 10-15 runs here and there. But at the end of the day, it is about how much they got. We were expecting to chase anything between 190-200 on this pitch. Better to have these matches at the start rather than the business end. (On the pitch) It looked like a really good wicket. It was hard and there was a good grass covering. We let ourselves down while we were batting. (On leading the side) Learning a lot, experiencing different things. It is exciting to be able to captain this Gujarat Titans side. We have reached the final twice in the past, and these are very exciting times.
It turned out to be a thoroughly convincing all-round performance from the Chennai Super Kings as they won their second game of this season by storming past Gujarat Titans by 63 runs. The Titans were never in the game and just kept sliding down the barrel as the run chase progressed. The opening duo of Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha held the key at the top of the order and needed to get GT off to a flying start.
The start was provided by Saha and Gill. Both looked in good touch before the dismissal of Gill in the 3rd over changed the complexion of the game. Deepak Chahar brought about his downfall and followed it up with the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha in his next over. The required rate climbed at an alarming rate and the likes of Sai Sudharsan, Vijay Shankar and David Miller had their task cut out. Shankar flayed at one fuller one from Daryl Mitchell and MS Dhoni ended up taking a brilliant diving catch.
David Miller and Sudharsan joined hands but the duo couldn't quite score the boundaries at the rate their team needed. Sudharsan was dismissed for a 31 ball 37 while David Miller couldn't make a significant impact either. A 16 ball 21 was never going to be enough. Azmatullah Omarzai and Rahul Tewatia came out in a situation when the yellow army had more or less sealed the match. In the end, it was Matheesha Pathirana who closed out the game with a good final over and ensured a 63 run win for CSK. Deepak Chahar, Mustafizur Rahman and Mustafizur Rahman was the pick of the bowlers bagging a couple of wickets each.
A convincing effort from the Chennai Super Kings as they continue their domination at home. After posting a massive 206, the bowlers needed to step up to the plate and just keep things tight. GT needed a move on in the powerplay which never really happened and it went from bad to worse as the run chase progressed. A 63 run defeat for the Gujarat Titans, also their biggest in terms of runs.
