Reece Topley is the Player of the Match for his figures of 6/24 in 9.5 overs
Topley: It is a terrific team performance, especially bouncing back after a defeat from the other end. I had surgery about three years ago, and now to be playing for England and playing my part means a lot. It is a dream for everyone to play for England. Big game over the weekend, we will look to prepare for that and win the series
Jos Buttler (England captain): Delighted with the performance. We didn't put on our best show with the bat in hand but got to a competitive total. It has always been a bat-first wicket here and after early wickets fell, Moeen and Willey put on an excellent partnership. It is a special day for him (Topley), we needed early wickets and he picked them up for us. Manchester is a great place to play cricket. With the series level, it will be an interesting game
Rohit Sharma (India captain): For starters, we bowled pretty well. Moeen and Willey put up a good partnership in the middle for them and that target was chaseable. The pitch took me by surprise, I expected it to get better. Playing against a team like England, you need to have your five best bowlers and an allrounder that leaves a pretty long tail. It is going to be an exciting clash in Manchester, we will have to look into what we need to work on and have a look at conditions there and adapt.
England win the match by 100 runs and level the series 1-1
14th July, a must-win match at Lords and guess what, it is England who comes on top yet again. This has been a complete game for the hosts who has come from behind and have levelled the series.
Batting first, England put on 246 on the board, courtesy of a couple of good knocks from Moeen Ali and David Willey. They then had a positive start with the ball in hand as their opening bowlers, Reece Topley and David Willey, got the ball to swing big time. Rohit Sharma was the first one to fall as he was trapped ahead of the sticks. Shikhar Dhawan, who looked shaky, played a laborious knock and was dismissed for 9 runs in 26 balls.
Virat Kohli looked in very good nick as he scored his first runs off a straight drive and then followed it up with a couple of cover drives. It lasted for a short while though, as he edged one behind to Buttler on a ball that was outside the off stump. Rishabh Pant fell to a nothing delivery and at one stage, India were reeling on 32/4.
Post that, it was a string of small partnerships that instilled some hopes back in the viewers of the match. Suryakumar Yadav carried on from where he left off at the Trent Bridge and scored a couple of deliveries before he chopped on back onto his stumps. Hardik Pandya and Jadeja batted positively, but both lost their wicket to off-spinners, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone respectively. Shami looked to take on the bowlers but chipped one down the throat of Ben Stokes at mid-on. In the end, it was the tail that could only add a few runs and lost their wickets as India was dismissed for 146 in 38.5 overs.
It was an exceptional bowling performance from England as they used 6 bowlers and five of them picked up a wicket each. Brydon Carse, David Willey, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone picked up a wicket each. David Willey was very economical and while other were expensive, they did the job and picked up wickets at regular intervals. Craig Overton went wicketless but restricted the batters really well. The thunder, however, was stolen by Reece Topley, who picked up 6 wickets including the wicket of Rohit Sharma. He made good use of the swing and the bounce the pitch had to offer and trouble the batters with his accurate lines and lengths.
Let's now go down to see what the captains and the player of the match has to say about today's clash
38.5 Reece Topley to Prasidh Krishna, EDGED AND GONE! SIX FOR TOPLEY! Back of a length delivery in the channel that continues with the angle. Krishna goes feeling for it away from his body and feathers it through to the keeper, who accepts the offering with utmost glee! India have crumbled under pressure at Lord's but take nothing away from a special Reece Topley performance!
