Commentary

And with that, we come to the end of our coverage of the second Test match between England and South Africa. We will be back with international action very early tomorrow morning, with Zimbabwe set to play an ODI series against Australia on Australian soil for the first time since 2003! It won't be a cricket-packed Sunday evening..... but it will have the mother of all clashes - India taking on Pakistan for the first time since the T20 World Cup last year! The two teams go up against each other in the first match of Group A in the 2022 Asia Cup! It'll be Shashwat and Sooryanarayanan, who have already been rubbing their hands, readying themselves to type out everything that unfurls from a blockbuster clash, all of which you can follow here! Ben Stokes is the Player Of The Match! With a hundred with the bat and four crucial wickets with the ball, he beat Ben Foakes to it, who had 7 dismissals in the match to go with his unbeaten 113!

Ben Stokes (Captain, England): It's been incredible, whenever we come out here, test matches or T20's, it's incredible, thank you for turning up in big numbers. Amazing feeling, coming back to win here from that the loss in the first test match, it sets the series up nicely in The Oval. (About Crawley's innings top of the order) The way which he applied himself, especially at the top of the innings to do that against a tough opposite, it was a new ball wicket. To be honest, he should be the one to be receiving the award, the way he kept, throughout the summer is impressive, massive plus for us as a team, amazing game for him and on that he shouldn't forget. It's great to have Robinson back, to see him come out and perform the way that he did was brilliant, obviously couple of tough months but he's back at his best. Definitely, adapting to the surface more than anything, some balls bouncing, some balls skids and it's all about decision making and keeping yourself positive, it made easier for me. I really wanted to get Jimmy with the new ball, I knew that was the moment and I was waiting for it, got my tail up with the reverse swing in play with the old ball.

Dean Elgar (Captain, South Africa): No, not at all, doesn't regret about choosing to bat first. It's always important that runs on the board in the first innings is pivotal in test cricket. We knew that the wicket would crumble but absolutely no regrets about batting first. Was happy with three down on day one, would've set up the test match nicely for the middle order. (About spinners bowling in tandem) With both Stokes and Foakes not scoring too many, it was a sort of a dead period for us. I thought, we needed to bring in a quick bowler in there, the bowlers were quite stretched a bit by then. DRS, a leading edge goes to hand, the luck plays a part and it was in their favor, not taking anything away from the performance, we were always in the game but just didn't go our way. From what I've heard, Rassie has fractured his figure, he'll be ruled out of the series, it's a big blow for us, the guys will have to take the responsibility and step up. It sets up for a hell of a series in the final test match, playing at The Oval, doesn't get better than this.

England win by an innings and 85 runs and level the 3-match Test series 1-1.

It wasn't as abysmal as it turned out to be when the final session had started. Rassie van der Dussen and Keegan Petersen, both of whom had reached 40s, were looking well set and were batting with some determination and purpose. And then Ben Stokes ran in to bowl the first over after tea and made a series of events take place all by himself! Van der Dussen poked at one he didn't need to, Keegan Petersen had no clue against one that took off the surface in the following over, and England, led by Ben Stokes the bowler, literally and figuratively, had one foot on the door already!

Kyle Verreynne and Simon Harmer then proceeded to try and keep the England bowlers at bay for as long as they could. While Verreynne's troubles with the moving ball were evident all along, he still managed to not nick one to the cordon behind and just about got bat on the nip-backers with his faulty front-foot movement. Harmer, though, looked a lot more composed out there, as the duo proceeded to bring the arrears down to double figures.

The skies at Manchester turned gloomier as the session rolled on, and with England taking the new ball and handing it to James Anderson, it was a matter of time before their vigil came to an end. Anderson nipped one right through a hapless Harmer's defence to take the top-of off-stump, Maharaj, Rabada and Nortje all nicked to the cordon behind, and it was left to Ollie Robinson to finish things off by cleaning up Lungi Ngidi!

And just like that, England take the series to a decider at the Kennington Oval!

There it is! A merely 5-and-a-half overs was all it took for England to wrap things up, South Africa have wilted terribly in the second Test match! An innings and 85 runs is the margin by which England square this series!

85.1 Ollie Robinson to Lungi Ngidi, OUT! KNOCKED HIM OVER! England level the series, 1-1. What a come back from England, what a performance from the champion team, lots of questions now for South Africa. Back of a length into Ngidi, straightened as he gets squared up and misses, goes past him and rattles the off-stump. It's all over for South Africa!
