Both the captains will share the trophy as it is a joint series win (1-1). We have had some incredible cricket throughout and the end has been a brilliant one for the hosts. Australia won the T20I series 2-1 while Sri Lanka took the ODI series and the Test series ending in a draw. It has been an evenly contested battle and that is all we have from this tour then. Plenty of action lined up so do make sure you catch it all right here. This has been Lavil and myself (Rishab) as we take your leave. Goodbye and see you soon folks!
Dimuth Karunaratne, Sri Lanka Captain: I think as I said earlier that we could not do much in the first game but if we can put a big score in the first innings we can have a good game and that is what we focused on. We knew it is going to be a good wicket for a coupe of days and I asked the batters to make the maximum of it. Dinesh Chandimal played really well and the others supported him well. We just had to bowl the right lines and lengths. We had to play normal cricket and try to get the basics right. It could have been 2-0 but we have bounced back hard and the debutants did an amazing job. Prabath was the key and he did an amazing job for us. The confidence is up for the Pakistan series. We just want to play good cricket.
Pat Cummins, Australia captain: I think there's a few things we could have done differently. We got ourselves in a good position in the first innings and we had chances but we didn't quite grab them. This is where you learn in heaps. I thought the guys were good on their first tour and guys coming back as well found methods. Unfortunately it did not work today but we can go home pleased as a group. A huge thankyou for the love for the hosts you have been. The crowds even cheered for us and we are thankful as we have had a great five weeks and would love to comeback.
Dinesh Chandimal is the man of the series for 219 runs in 2 test matches
Dinesh Chandimal: I'm over the moon. When you perform and the team wins the game, it makes it even sweeter. We get tough tracks in Galle Didn't have a specific plan just decided to take the attack to the bowlers and score the runs. It was a tough track to bat on in the first game but was much better on the first three days of this match to bat. I thought if we get a lead in excess of 100 runs, we could put them under pressure. I was in and out of the team, but I had my family by my side and my teammates and the coaching staff
Prabath Jayasuriya is the man of the match for his combined match figures of 12/177
Prabath Jayasuriya: Extremely happy, I have worked hard for this and I feel good achieving this. I was prepared for this match as I had played the A games and was ready to take the field whenever called(loosely translated from Sinhala)
What a memorable game this has been for Sri Lanka. Having lost the first Test, with the COVID issues and odds against them under pressure, they have responded beautifully to come back and how. They first came back to bowl Australia out for 364 in the first innings after the hosts were in a dominant position. Their batters then made sure Sri Lanka got well above their total with Karunaratne, Mendis and Matthews all chipping in with the highlight being the terrific double hundred from Dinesh Chandimal that gave them the platform for this magical performance.
At the start of the session, Sri Lanka needed nine wickets to win and it took them just about a couple of hours to take all of them and make sure that the game ended in the final session here. Prabath Jayasuriya was once again the pick of the bowlers and boy has he had a spectacular debut to his Test career. Ramesh Mendis and Maheesh Theekshana gave him good support but he was really the man for the hosts in this game. 12 wickets on his debut and this has been an unbelievable performance from him.
Australia struggled to get partnerships going and when they lost wickets, they lost them in clusters and simply could not stand for long against the Sri Lankan spinners. Jayasuriya bowled with excellent control and the start has been great from him. A lot of promise, skill and experience being shown and this is a brilliant sign for Sri Lanka going forward. The conditions did favor the spinners alright but they had to make it count and they put up a stunning effort to bundle Australia out and level the series.
This is for the first time that Australia have lost a Test by an innings since 2016 and this will be disappointing for them. A much-needed win for Sri Lanka not just as a side but as a nation as well with everything going around. This incredible win is going to give them a lot of confidence and belief. Their performances have been disappointing but a mammoth win like this is certainly a shot in the arm and a morale booster that they badly needed.
Australia won the T20I series but Sri Lanka have comeback so very well to win the ODI and draw the Test series to finish this tour on a high. Against a strong Australian batting line-up, this performance is truly commendable from the side with everything happening. The senior pros stepping up with the new comers making an impact as well and that is very pleasing to see as a side. A complete all-round performance and this is a win that Sri Lanka will cherish for a long long time to come!
They say sport heals everything. Indeed it does. A couple of days ago, there were protestors who were shouting slogans outside the stadium and now you see smiling faces, dancing spectators who rejoice and soak in the joy this win brings to them. What a series this has been for the people of Sri Lanka who have got something to smile about in these tough times for them. "This is one of the most special test wins I have witnessed" quips Russell Arnold on air. Indeed this has been as they have dismissed a full-strength Australian batting lineup in a session and half to square off the series and most importantly, register 12 important WTC points on the board.
Sri Lanka win by an innings and 39 runs and the series is drawn 1-1!
Drift, turn and bounce off the surface for Jayasuriya and he is making the batter reach for the delivery. This is good bowling once again from him and he will ideally wrap it up for Sri Lanka. They beat Australia and this has been an incredible turn around from the hosts. What a fight and what a performance this has been. Prabath ends with 12 wickets and he is going to remember this game for a long time to come. First time that Sri Lanka have beaten Australia by an innings. Magnificent victory!
