As expected, Sri Lanka clinch a 2-0 victory over Ireland in the test series. Sri Lankan batters had a really good time with the bat. Karunaratne, Mendis and Madushka will take plenty of confidence from this series. The bowlers will also take back some fond memories from here. It was hard for Ireland to take some positives from the first test but they will definitely have some happy memories from this match, at least from the batting perspective.
Dimuth Karunaratne (Sri Lanka Captain): Yeah, the pitch was very different to the one we got in the first test. The bowlers were tested and they found solutions to the problems every time. We thought if they could get 500, we could cross 500. Nishan and I got off to a good start that gave us the impetus to score a big one. Runs always matter for batters and it gives them confidence. I told the bowlers that rain could take place anytime so we had to finish things off quickly in the third innings and Ramesh stepped up. The way he bowled today was incredible. Asitha was terrific as well, especially when he was reversing it. We need such type of performances in overseas tests as well.
Andrew Balbirnie (Ireland Captain): I am fine. It was a pretty good spell from Mendis. Harry batted really well. Taking the game to day 5 was a positive. We wanted to show the world that we can play red-ball cricket as well and we are really fortunate Sri Lanka gave us an opportunity. It is a lovely place to play cricket. Our boys have learnt a lot in these two weeks. Really grateful for the fans who showed up and I hope we made them proud as well as the Sri Lankan public.
Kusal Mendis (Man of the Series) - It was a challenging wicket and I changed my style of batting. I want to be a bit aggressive these days to take on the bowlers and it really worked
Prabath Jayasuriya (Man of the Match) - Yeah, Thank you. This is a different wicket to the first match and it's a batting-friendly wicket. We did the basic things bowling here. Patience is very important to bowl in these wickets. My shoulder is good
Time for presentations
Ramesh Mendis: I am really happy with my performance and the team's efforts. I love bowling here at Galle International. Today I kept my line and length consistent which was rewarding. It's a proud moment for us(on Sri Lanka registering 100 wins in test cricket).
Sri Lanka win by an innings and 10 runs and complete a 2-0 whitewash over Ireland.
Ireland (1st innings) 492 Sri Lanka (1st innings) 704-3d Ireland (2nd innings) 202 all out Harry Tector 85(189) | Ramesh Mendis 5/64(27) | Asitha Fernando 3/30(11.3)
Another comprehensive victory for Sri Lanka over Ireland but this time they had to work really hard for this one as the Irish men dragged the match till the second session of the fifth day. It was a pretty flat surface which barely had anything for the bowlers. Ireland capitalized on a crucial toss and put on 492 after opting to bat first. Stirling and McBrine contributed with centuries while Balbirnie missed out on one by 5 runs. Jayasuriya's marathon spell in the first innings helped Sri Lanka in restricting Ireland under 500.
Sri Lanka came out to bat as if they had no scoreboard pressure. Karunaratne and Madushka were scoring at a really high pace. The rain breaks did not break their momentum as they continued to attack the bowlers. Karunaratne could not convert his hundred into a big one but Madushka and Mendis did manage to bring up their double tons. Mathews after a rare failure in the first test, registered a hundred and that's when Karunaratne declared the innings.
Ireland were trailing by 212 runs and with 120 overs remaining in the match, they had no option but to survive. The pitch still hadn't opened up and despite the two overnight wickets, Ireland had a decent chance of drawing this game. However, Mendis broke through the Irish middle order with his relentless consistency and bagged five scalps. Tector worked hard for his half-century and switched gears once he was running out of partners but Asitha Fernando hit the final nail in coffin by removing him with an inswinging yorker. He ended his spell with three wickets and helped his side register an innings victory.
Two in two for Asitha! He does the job and makes sure that his side registers an innings victory. This is now Sri Lanka's 100th victory in test cricket.
