NFL games are packed with action and provide for some of the most entertainment. Watching at home can be fulfilling but the best way to watch an American football game is by attending it at the stadium. Nothing can beat the atmosphere, the excitement, and the pure joy of experiencing a live match just a few feet away from the real action. Being part of a huge crowd going crazy when your team scores provides a thrilling experience which is second to none. Furthermore, the overall fan experience has also increased greatly nowadays with newer stadiums such as the Allegiant Stadium making their way into the league.
Las Vegas Raiders Home Venue
Allegiant Stadium is the new home of the Las Vegas Raiders football franchise. This franchise has a bit of a history with relocation as the team came into existence in Oakland, California and were known as the Oakland Raiders. In 1982 the team moved to Los Angeles and then returned to Oakland in 1995. It was only in 2020 that the Raiders settled in Las Vegas and thus this franchise has seen its fair share of different stadiums.
The Allegiant Stadium is located in the city of Paradise, Nevada just west of Interstate 15. In addition to being used by the Raiders, the stadium is also operational for special games such as the Vegas Kickoff Classic and Las Vegas Bowl. University of Nevada and Rebels College football teams also play their home games at this stadium. Apart from American football, the Allegiant Stadium hosts a number of other sporting events as well.
Allegiant Stadium Capacity
As is the case with many of the stadiums in the United States, Allegiant Stadium has different capacity depending upon the sport being played. This is possible because different sports require different shapes and sizes which changes the seating arrangement.
The standard capacity of the stadium is 65,000 for gridiron football while the capacity for soccer games is limited to 61,000 only. In case of expansion, the seating capacity can be increased up to 71,835.
Allegiant Stadium History
Talks to construct a properly sized NFL stadium in Las Vegas started in 2016 as the previous stadium was undersized for football games. During this time the Raiders owner was also looking for a stadium and a new city to relocate the team as the situation in Oakland was at an impasse. Raiders owner funded $500 million in 2016 to get the project underway and the eventual stadium cost came out to nearly $1.9 billion making it the second costliest stadium to be built in the entire world.
The stadium was eventually completed by 2020 and the Raiders officially relocated to Las Vegas before the start of the 2020 NFL season, but the opening of the stadium was complicated due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The first event to be held at the stadium was the Raiders home game against the New Orleans Saints on September 21, 2020.
Allegiant Stadium Construction and Cost
The Allegiant stadium in Paradise, Nevada is truly a modern architectural wonder and a world class site for hosting various sporting events. The overall construction cost was a mind-boggling $1.9 billion making the second most expensive stadium to be built in the world behind the So-Fi Stadium is Los Angeles. The 65,000 capacity stadium was completed in July 2020 and took nearly three years to finish from ground up. The time period of 31 months is one of the fastest for a modern day stadium to be built from scratch.
Allegiant Stadium has a retractable natural turf field, huge walls that open up to provide great views of the Las Vegas Strip, and a semi-transparent roof. The stadium also boasts of multiple luxurious spaces at all levels. It is already a Super Bowl ready site with Super Bowl LVIII set to take place here on Sunday, 11 February, 2024.
