Myles Garrett: A Brief Biography
Myles Garrett is a defensive end who has been playing for the NFL team Cleveland Browns since 2017. He was the first pick of round 1 of the 2017 NFL Draft, becoming the highest draft pick ever from Texas A&M University. Garrett is one of the best defensive ends in the league. He has been named to three Pro-Bowls and two First-Team All-Pros.
Myles Garrett’s Early Life and Background
Myles was born in Arlington, Texas and attended Martin High School. He was a letterman in football, track and basketball. He received the Landry Award in 2013 for his performance in football as a high school senior. He committed to playing football at Texas A&M University.
In his freshman year, he broke the college’s freshman sack record (5.5) in his first six games. He broke the SEC sack record (8) in nine games. He suffered a concussion in his freshman year and a few games. In his sophomore year, Garrett outperformed himself to win the Billis Willis Award and also earned a first-team All-American selection. He finished the final season of his college career with 8.5 sacks, 32 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 10 quarterback hurries. He entered the 2017 NFL Draft after foregoing his senior college year.

Garrett was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. He was ranked the top defensive prospect by the scouts after the NFL Combine and Texas A&M Pro Day. He was the overall #1 pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Garrett was followed by fellow 2017 NFL Draft class players like quarterback Patrick Mahomes, running back Alvin Kamara, and safety Jamal Adams.
Myles Garrett’s NFL Journey
Garrett signed a fully guaranteed four-year deal with the Cleveland Browns in 2017. He began his rookie season as a starting defensive end alongside Emmanuel Ogbah. He missed the first four games of the season due to an ankle injury. He played a total of 11 games in the season but led the team in sacks. In his second season with the Browns, he was named the defensive captain. He finished the season with 13.5 sacks, 44 combined tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and 29 quarterback hits after starting all games of the season.
In Week 11 of the 2019 season, Garrett had an altercation with Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph. He made a late hit on Rudolph, and then removed his helmet and struck his head with the underside of the helmet. A fight ensued between Garrett, Steelers lineman Maurkice Pouncey, and Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi. Garrett was also hit on his head several times by Pouncey. He was suspended for the rest of the season and fined $45,623.
He signed a five-year contract extension with the Browns in 2020. He was named to the 2020 NFL All-Pro first team at the end of the regular season. Garrett was also affected by COVID-19 before the Week 11 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2021 Garrett broke the franchise record for most sacks in a single game by recording 4.5 sacks against the Bears’ rookie quarterback Justin Fields. He also broke the franchise record for most sacks in a single season, by Week 13 of the regular season.

Myles Garrett has been one of the best defensive performers for the Cleveland Browns since he joined the team. His initial four-year contract gave him a $20..25 million signing bonus. He helped the Browns break their playoff drought by helping the team reach the 2020 NFL Playoffs. To date, Garrett has made 58.5 sacks, 203 combined tackles, and 11 forced fumbles in the regular seasons. He has been part of the Pro Bowl thrice and was also named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team even after missing many games in his rookie season due to injury.
