Trevon Diggs is a cornerback who plays for the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL. The young cornerback joined the Cowboys in 2020 and was named as a starter since his rookie season itself. He started to make a name for himself in the NFL with exemplary performances and recording the most single-season NFL interceptions in the league in 40 years.

Trevon Diggs’ Early Life and Background

Trevon Diggs was born on September 20, 1998 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Diggs initially attended Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland. After his sophomore year, he decided to transfer to The Avalon School in Wheaton, Maryland, to follow his football coach Tyree Spinner. He was a wide receiver and defensive back in high school. He had 1,008 yards and 15 touchdowns on 78 receptions as a junior. He recorded 1,269 yards receiving as a senior. He was twice selected as a receiver for the All-Washington D.C. Metro team. To play collegiate football, he pledged to the University of Alabama.

Diggs was a return specialist, wide receiver, and safety for Alabama in 2016 as a true freshman. He concluded the season with 11 catches for 88 yards and a score on offense, five tackles and one forced fumble on defense, and 296 total return yards on special teams. Diggs permanently shifted to cornerback as a sophomore in 2017.

He started the first game of the season against Florida State University until Levi Wallace passed him on the depth chart. He made 6 tackles and three passes were intercepted. He also participated on special teams, returning 2 kickoffs for 74 yards and 18 punts for 154 yards, with a long of 21 yards. When he injured his foot against the University of Arkansas as a junior in 2018, Diggs was gone for the season after starting the first six games. He had 20 tackles and a pick-six at year's end.

He started 12 games as a senior in 2019 and finished with 37 tackles, 3 interceptions (tied for second on the team), 8 passes defended (tied for first on the team), and 2 recovered fumbles, one of which he returned 100 yards for a touchdown.

Trevon Diggs’ NFL Journey

After being drafted by the Cowboys in 2020, Diggs was named as the starting cornerback for the team. In a 38-49 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 4, he recorded his first career sack. In Week 8's 9-23 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles, Diggs recorded his first two career picks. A foot fracture the next week put him on injured reserve until the end of December.

In Week 3 of the 2021 campaign, Diggs scored for the first time in his career thanks to an interception by Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. As a result of the Cowboys' victory, Diggs was voted the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for September. In Week 4, he continued to have success, making four tackles and two interceptions in a win over the Carolina Panthers. Diggs received the NFC Defensive Player of the Week award for his efforts.

Two weeks later, in Week 6, he scored his second touchdown of the season following a Mac Jones interception for the New England Patriots. Diggs then tied the NFL record with six interceptions to open the season for the most straight games. He then tied the Cowboys single-season record for interceptions after recording his 11th one at the end of December. Furthermore, Diggs' 11 interceptions in a single season were the most recorded by an NFL player in the previous 40 years. 2021 was Trevon Diggs’ breakout season for which he also received an All-Pro honor.

Trevon Diggs has become an important player for the Dallas Cowboys as the youngster sealed his spot as the starting cornerback in his rookie season itself. He played a total of 12 games and started 11 of them in the 2020 season (missing out on the rest of the games due to an injury). Diggs recorded his first career sack on Baker Mayfield during the 49–38 loss.

In Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football, Diggs recorded his first 2 career interceptions off of passes thrown by Carson Wentz during the 23–9 loss.
