Iyo Sky: A Brief Biography

Iyo Sky is a Japanese professional wrestler signed with WWE. She is best known for her work on the Japanese Circuit and as Io Shirai in WWE. She is a former NXT Women's and Women's Tag Team Champion. She currently performs under the ring name Iyo Sky and is a member of the faction Damage Control alongside Dakota Kai and Bayley.

Early Life

Iyo Sky was born Mosami Odate, which is her real name, in Kamakura, Kanagawa, Japan. Her birth date is May 8, 1990. The name of her sister is Mio Shirai. She made her pro-wrestling debut at a young age as she started wrestling professionally in 2007, alongside her older sister where the two took the ring names Io and Mio Shirai. In Japanese, Shirai means Purple Thunder. Sky would go on to climb the ladder of stardom under the name Io Shirai up until her name is changed to Iyo Sky in 2022 when she is called up to the WWE main roster.

Independent Circuit (2007-2018)

In 2007, Odate made her professional debut on the independent circuit along with her older sister. She wrestled for several promotions, such as Pro Wrestling Wave, JWP Joshi Puroresu, and Sendai Girls' Pro Wrestling. The Shirai sisters have won several tag team titles on various independent promotions. In 2010, Shirai sisters began working with Kana and formed Triple Tails. The union worked for a year and won several matches. In 2011, she wanted to pursue a singles career and left the tag team. Shirai rose to prominence during her time in Mexico and Stardom. She is a former six-time artist of Stardom champion. She is the second longest-reigning World of Stardom champion.

WWE (2018-Present)

In 2017, Shirai gave a tryout for WWE and signed a contract. However, Shirai delayed her debut due to some ongoing neck injuries and prior Stardom commitments. In 2018, she entered the second Mae Young Class and lost to Toni Storm in the finals. After the event, she began working on NXT. In December, she began working with Kairi Sane. In 2019, she faced Shayna Baszler on three occasions for the NXT Women's Championship but failed to win. After her loss, she turned on Candice LeRae. She turned into a darker character and began feuding with Candice LeRae.

At TakeOver Toronto, she defeated LeRae via submission. In November, she joined Team Baszler for WarGames and Team NXT for Survivor Series. At WarGames, Team Ripley lost to Team Baszler. At Survivor Series, Team NXT defeated Team RAW and SmackDown. In 2020, she returned from an injury began winning matches. At In Your House, she defeated Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley for the NXT Women's Championship. After over 300 days, she lost the title to Raquel Gonzalez at Stand and Deliver.

In 2021, after losing the title, she began teaming up with Zoey Stark. At The Great American Bash, she and Stark defeated The Way to win the WWE NXT Women's Tag Team Championship. At Halloween Havoc, they lost the titles to Toxic Attraction. Shirai spent the rest of the year feuding with Toxic Attraction. In 2022, she assisted Kay Lee Ray against Toxic Attraction. The duo entered and managed to win the Dusty Rhodes Women's Classic. The duo challenged Mandy Rose for the NXT Women's Championship at Stand and Deliver in a losing effort following which Shirai went on an indefinite hiatus.

Main Roster

Shirai debuted on the main roster at SummerSlam 2022 alongside Bayley and Dokata Kai. The trio had a show-down against Bianca Belair and Becky Lynch. Shirai was also renamed as Iyo Sky on the same night. She and Kai partook in the tournament to crown the WWE Women's Tag Team Champions and made it to the final before being defeated by Aliyah and Raquel Rodriguez in the finals. At Clash at the Castle, the trio, now named Damage Control defeated Alexa Bliss, Asuka and Becky Lynch in a six-women tag team match.

On the September 12, 2022 episode of RAW, Sky and Kai defeated Aliyah and Rodriguez to become the WWE Women's Tag Team Champions.At Survivor Series 2022, she was a part of Team Bayley in a losing effort where Team Bianca defeated Team Bayley in a War Games match after Becky Lynch scored the pin on Dakota Kai. On the February 27, 2023 episode of RAW, Kai and Sky defended their tag team gold against Lynch and Trish Stratus. The latter defeated the champions with a little assist from Lita bringing an end to Damage CTRL's Women's tag team championship reign. Next week, Lynch, Stratus, and Lita challenged Damage CTRL for a match at WrestleMania, and the challenge was accepted.

At the event, Damage CTRL lost to Lynch, Lita, and Stratus. On the April 10 episode of WWE RAW, Sky defeated Mia Yim and Piper Niven in a triple threat match to become the #1 Contender for the WWE RAW Women's Championship. She faced Bianca Belair for the title at WWE Backlash 2023. At the event, Sky came up short against the EST of WWE despite a hard-fought battle. At the WWE Draft 2023, Sky, alongside Bayley and Dakota Kai, was drafted to SmackDown. A few weeks later, Sky defeated Shotzi on SmackDown to qualify for the Women's Money in the Bank ladder match and partook in the match for a shot at the esteemed briefcase. At the event, Sky outlasted Bayley, Becky Lynch, Trish Stratus, Zelina Vega and Zoey Stark to win the Women's Money in the Bank briefcase. During the match, Sky's friend Bayley tried to stop her from winning the title and Sky lashed out at her in frustration, handcuffing Bayley and Lynch before winning the title.

WWE Women's Championship

While a breakdown between Sky and Bayley was expected after the event, the two buried the hatchet and celebrated Sky's victory. At SummerSlam 2023, WWE Women's Champion Asuka defended her gold against Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair but lost to Belair. Her celebrations were, however, short-lived as Sky came out to cash in her Money in the Bank briefcase. Sky won the WWE Women's Championship, marking her first individual title on the main roster. At Fastlane, she retained the gold against Asuka and Charlotte Flair in a triple-threat match. Following her victory, Bianca Belair returned to WWE and challenged Sky for the title. A match between the two was then officiated for Crown Jewel 2023. At the event, Sky won the match after Kairi Sane returned to WWE.

Sane officially joined the Damage CTRL the following SmackDown. Former WWE Women's Champion Asuka joined the faction as well. Sky, Bayley, Sane and Asuka then faced the team of Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Shotzi and Bianca Belair at Survivor Series: WarGames. Damage CTRL lost the match where Bayley was pinned by The Man. At Royal Rumble, Bayley won the Women's Royal Rumble. The following week, she revealed that the rest of the members of the group were conspiring against her and Damage CTRL then kicked Bayley off the group. A match for Iyo Sky's WWE Women's Championship was then made official for WrestleMania XL Night One.
