Rey Mysterio, born Oscar Gutierrez, is a Mexican-American professional wrestler who is best known for his time in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). On the 11 August, 2023 episode of SmackDown, Escobar earned the shot against Austin Theory's United States Championship. However, he could not compete in the match and was replaced by Rey Mysterio. The Legendary Luchador went on to beat Theory and win the United States Championship for the third time in his career. He then defended his gold against Austin Theory at Payback 2023 in a winning effort.
During his reign, Mysterio also defended his title against stablemate Santos Escobar who wanted to challenge for the gold once. At Fastlane 2023, Mysterio and Escobar teamed up with a returning Carlito to defeat Street Profits and Bobby Lashley. On the October 20 episode of SmackDown, Logan Paul returned to WWE and vowed to win a title, challenging Rey Mysterio for the US Championship. A match was then booked between the two superstars for Crown Jewel. At the event, Paul used brass knuckles to defeat Mysterio and end his reign at 85 days.
The following SmackDown, Carlito blamed Santos Escobar for this loss leading to a breakout between the faction. Later that night, Carlito lost a match to Lashley and Escobar led a surprise attack on Mysterio. Mysterio then underwent a knee surgery and was announced to be out of action for at least six weeks.
