The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will kick-start on March 22 when defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) host the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

IPL Points Table 2025 rules
After playing their 14 league-stage matches, the main objective of all ten IPL franchises will be to finish within the top 4 in the IPL points table. Since the top two teams have an additional chance to qualify for the IPL Finals via 'Qualifier 2', finishing in the top two in the points table will be the secondary objective for the franchises.
The IPL points table is decided based on points that each team accumulates during the league phase. If two teams end up with the same number of points, then their position in the points table is ascertained based on "Net Run Rate" (NRR).
The rules for accumulating points in IPL points table 2025 are as follows:
- Each team will get 2 points for a win.
- A team gets 1 point in case the game is abandoned or ends abruptly as No Result.
- A team will get 0 points in case of a loss.
The NRR of a team is calculated as the difference between ‘the number of runs scored by the team to the number of overs faced’ to ‘the number of runs conceded by the team to the number of overs bowled’ in the tournament.
IPL Points Table & Standings Trivia
- No team has ever progressed to the Playoffs with less than 12 points in the history of IPL.
- Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Deccan Chargers (now defunct) are the only 2 teams to have accumulated 4 points in an IPL Season, which is the lowest points accumulated by any team.
- Kolkata Knight Riders and Deccan Chargers (now defunct) are the only teams to have not finished 1st in the Indian Premier League Points table and won the tournament.
- Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) is the only team in IPL history to finish 1st in the IPL points table without winning the title. They have done it thrice.
- Two sets of three teams were tied on the same number of points in IPL 2020 (Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders were tied on 14 while Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were tied on 12 each).
- Four teams were tied on 14 points each in IPL 2010 - Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Kolkata Knight Riders.
- The highest NRR achieved by any team at the end of the league stage is +1.428 by the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 while the lowest is -1.436 achieved by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in IPL 2015.
- The highest number of points achieved by a team in a particular IPL season is 22. It was achieved by Rajasthan Royals in 2008, Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2012, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in 2013, and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2014.
- In IPL 2022, the Mumbai Indians finished at the 10th spot for the first time in their history.
- Rajasthan Royals finished last in IPL 2020 with 12 points. This is the highest ever IPL points a franchise attained while finishing last on the points table.

The ‘for’ stands for the cumulative runs scored and wickets lost by a particular team in an IPL season while the ‘against’ stands for the aggregate runs conceded and wickets taken by a particular team in an IPL season. This also has an impact on their standings in the IPL Points Table.
