WWE SummerSlam history
After the hugely successful WrestleMania in 1985, WWE decided to expand upon its PPV ideology. WrestleMania III sold more than 90,000 tickets followed by the promotion announcing another annual event in the form of Survivor Series later in 1987. The promotion did not stop there as it went on to announce two more events the next year. While Royal Rumble was announced as an event for January, the only slot left for quarterly PPVs was around August. This spot was filled by the announcement of SummerSlam.
These four events are now widely referred to as The Big Four PPVs of WWE and sometimes The Big Five including Money in the Bank. The first SummerSlam was held on August 29, 1988, at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The 1992 edition of the event saw more than 80,000 people gathered in the crowd. It is the most attended WWE event besides WrestleMania. SummerSlam has been dubbed “The Biggest Party of the Summer” and also the second biggest event of WWE. However, in 2021, it was marketed as the biggest event of the year and also managed to outsell WrestleMania 37, which was affected due to COVID-19. Beyond 2025, the event is set to become a two-night event.

SummerSlam 2024 Matches
Women's World Championship - Liv Morgan (c) vs. Rhea Ripley
At WrestleMania XL, Rhea Ripley defeated Becky Lynch to retain her Women's World Championship. However, she was then attacked and injured by Liv Morgan which forced Ripley out of action and she had to relinquish her title. After Lynch, Morgan soon became the new champion and started befriending Ripley's Judgment Day members, especially Dominik Mysterio. On the July 8, 2024, episode of RAW, Ripley returned to WWE and laid out a challenge to Morgan for the title on the next week of RAW, which Morgan accepted, setting up a much-anticipated clash at SummerSlam. At the event, Dominik turned on Ripley and helped Liv retain her title.
Intercontinental Championship - Sami Zayn (c) vs. Bron Breakker
Sami Zayn successfully defended his Intercontinental Championship against Bron Breakker at Money in the Bank. However, Breakker's aggression towards Zayn and Ilja Dragunov escalated, culminating in a brutal match against Dragunov on RAW. Breakker's dominance forced a referee stoppage, securing him a victory and a title shot against Zayn at SummerSlam. Breakker made quick work of the champion to win the title.
United States Championship - Logan Paul (c) vs LA Knight
Logan Paul won the WWE United States Championship back in November 2023 but has defended the title only twice since then, first at Royal Rumble and then at WrestleMania, whereas the titles are usually defended at least once a month. LA Knight has particularly taken frustration to this and has been chasing Paul for weeks inside and outside the ring to get a shot at the title. Following weeks of chase, he was granted a title shot on the July 19, 2024, episode of SmackDown. The two stars faced for Paul's title at SummerSlam 2024, where Knight won the championship.
WWE Women's Championship - Bayley (c) vs. Nia Jax
At King and Queen of the Ring 2024, Nia Jax defeated Lyra Valkyria and became the Queen of the Ring. Now, she gets the chance to challenge for the epitome of SmackDown Women's wrestling, the Women's World Championship. The title is held by Bayley who defeated Iyo Sky at WrestleMania XL. Bayley and Nia Jax will face each other at WWE SummerSlam 2024. While Tiffany Stratton tried to cash in her briefcase, eventually, Jax walked out as the Champion.
Drew McIntyre vs. CM Punk - Seth Rollins as Special Guest Referee
CM Punk's shocking return to WWE at Survivor Series: WarGames ignited a fiery rivalry with Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre. Punk's interference has consistently derailed McIntyre's title pursuits, first at WrestleMania, then Clash at the Castle, and then at Money in the Bank when McIntyre had cashed in his briefcase. As McIntyre was pinned at MITB due to Punk's interference, this also cost Seth Rollins who was also competing in that triple threat match. The fallout from these interactions culminated in a scheduled match between Punk and McIntyre at SummerSlam, with Rollins serving as the special guest referee. At the event, after a whirlwind of emotions, McIntyre defeated Punk.
World Heavyweight Championship - Damian Priest (c) vs. Gunther
At King and Queen of the Ring 2024, Gunther defeated Randy Orton to become the King of the Ring. It was announced that the King of the Ring will get to challenge the world champion of his brand. The current World Heavyweight Champion is Damian Priest, who has since defended his title against Drew McIntyre at Clash at the Castle and then against Seth Rollins and Mr. MITB McIntyre at Money in the Bank. At the event, Finn Balor turned on Damian Priest and helped Gunther win the title.
WWE Championship - Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Solo Sikoa
At WrestleMania XL, Cody Rhodes defeated Roman Reigns to become the new Undisputed WWE Champion. Following that, Roman Reigns and The Rock went on indefinite hiatus while Solo Sikoa assumed the leadership role. He kicked Jimmy Uso out of the group and introduced Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, and Jacob Fatu as the new members. Later, the group also kicked Paul Heyman out of the group after he refused to acknowledge Sikoa as the Tribal Chief. During the same time, The Bloodline started fighting against numerous stars, most prominently Kevin Owens, Randy Orton, and the Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes. At Money in the Bank, The Bloodline defeated these three stars in a Six Man Tag Match where Sikoa pinned Rhodes. A few days later, Rhodes challenged Sikoa for a match which was then made official for the WWE Title at SummerSlam 2024. At the event, Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, and Jacob Fatu came to help Sikoa while Randy Orton and Kevin Owens tried to even the odds. In the closing minutes, Roman Reigns made his return to WWE and helped Cody Rhodes retain the gold.
