Another surprise was the fact that he was renamed to Max Dupri. He led the group involving Mace, Mansoor, and later Maxxine Dupri. At the event, WWE Legend John Cena donned the role of the referee and officiated the match. It was LA Knight who came out on top in this match. He earned Cena's respect in the match and also showered his acknowledgment for the legend of the sport. On the September 29 episode of SmackDown, John Cena was alone against Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa who had injured AJ Styles, Cena's partner. LA Knight returned to WWE and announced himself to be Cena's tag team partner at Fastlane. At the event, Cena and Knight defeated Sikoa and Uso in a tag team match. Knight acted as a special guest referee on the October 10 episode of SmackDown.

The next week, Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns returned to WWE and was acknowledged by John Cena. While Cena himself did not challenge Reigns, he told Reigns that there was someone worthy of dethroning him. LA Knight came out revealing himself to be Reigns' next opponent. The two superstars then collided at Crown Jewel 2023. Knight was moments away from victory before he was cost by Jimmy Uso. Knight, however, did not back out from his attempt at challenging Roman Reigns and booked his ticket at Royal Rumble.

He was not the only wrestler challenging Reigns at the event, making it a fatal 4-way also involving Randy Orton and AJ Styles. However, Reigns managed to retain the gold. Knight then booked his place for the Men's Elimination Chamber match at Elimination Chamber: Perth. The winner of the match was booked to face Seth Rollins at WrestleMania for his World Heavyweight Championship.
