That's all we from this contest, folks. This is Pratyush Rohra, signing off on behalf of my co-commentator, Sooryanarayan Sesha, and the rest of the squad at Sportskeeda. We hope you enjoyed our coverage of this First Test. There's still plenty of cricketing action coming your way later in the day as well! Do tune in to catch all the live-action from those ones. See you around then! Buh-bye for now...
Alrighty then! That was tidily wrapped by Australia as they take an early lead to get the Ashes underway. They did it in some style and asserted their dominance throughout the course of this First Test and will be pretty chuffed to sign off from The Gabba with a win. All eyes are on Adelaide for the Day-Night Test now, and on England, with the kind of changes they decide to make leading into that game. As for now, the scoreline leads 1-0 in favor of the hosts as they made light work of this contest on a Saturday morning.
Travis Head is the Player of the Match: The staff were fantastic and gave me a clear mind about their expectations leading into the camp. That definitely helped. It was great to get the nod and great to contribute. It was a fantastic week and a great starting point for us as a team. A bit of credit goes to Davey (Warner) and Marnus. Their partnership really set me up. I learned a lot from the way that Jos Buttler played and took it on. It was nice to get a score there and this morning was fantastic. Just a lot of emotion in the moment. It was just about riding the wave with the crowd, which is what Test cricket is all about. (On Lyon) He came back beautifully. He would have been disappointed yesterday but we spoke about it in the morning and knew that if he stayed tough rewards were around the corner. It was fantastic to see him come back strong for us. I can't wait to get home (to Adelaide).
Pat Cummins (Australia Captain): First and foremost, I really enjoyed it (first game as captain). A lot of things did go right, probably from the toss. Overcast conditions and then blue skies the next day when we came out to bat. A real complete performance - the bowlers did a great job on Day 1 and then Marnus and Davy got a great stand. Trav (Head) was brilliant. I was really happy with how everyone stuck to it. We bowled without much luck yesterday but it was fair given the luck we had on Day 2. Everyone was at it trying to get that breakthrough. (On Travis Head) That's why want him in the side - he can take the game away from them in a couple of hours. We've seen him do it for South Australia. He's still young but an old pro going by the number of first-class games he's played. He's got a great future. (On Josh Hazlewood not bowling much) He was a bit sore yesterday - we didn't want him to pull up with anything. (Status on Warner's injury) We couldn't find him today - we were looking around the stadium (laughs), but we hope he'll be fit for the next game.
Joe Root (England captain): Obviously some frustration there. We worked really hard to get ourselves back in the game last night and we knew how important it was to try and get through to the new ball unscathed. If we (myself and Malan) carried that partnership forward we could have given ourselves an opportunity. You saw how the pitch was starting to play here with sideways movement and the cracks were appearing. It's a shame we couldn't get through that initial period this morning. (On Selections) We wanted variation in our attack, to change the pace and move through different gears. Easy to suggest otherwise with hindsight, but we can't create as many chances as we did and put them down. We have to get better in the field. Similar with the bat. 40-4 is not a great place to start but we know where we need to improve. Having said that, the way we responded in the second innings showed fight which will stand us in good stead. (On Leach) Jack's a fine spinner and is very important to us. He's shown what an instrumental part he can play, and I'm sure he will again. It's important in a five-match series to not feel too sorry for ourselves, relish the challenge to go out there and try and get one back. There are good things to take. As you said, we created some good chances with the ball and felt like we were in the game for a long time. We need to learn from our mistakes and come back stronger in the next game.
Australia won by 9 wickets.
So, Australia draw first blood in the Ashes and set the tone for the rest of the series. They bury the ghosts of Gabba after their last game here against India. The hosts were in the driving seat, pretty much from Day One of the Test when they dismissed England for a measly 144. Australia's skipper, Pat Cummins led the charge for his side, bagging a fifer on captaincy debut.
The headlines on Day Two of the Test belonged to Travis Head. While David Warner's entertaining partnership alongside Marnus Labuschagne kept England at bay, both missed out on well-deserved centuries. However, Travis Head piled the misery on the visitors with his counter-attacking century to take the game away from them.
With a mountain to climb on Day Three, the Three Lions finally arrived to the Ashes party and mounted some sort of comeback. To lead the way of course, was Joe Root alongside Dawid Malan as the two stitched together a 162-run stand which added some life to the contest as we were heading into the final two days of the Test.
Yet, it was Australia that came roaring back when it mattered the most. In a spectacular turn of events, the visitors lost 8 wickets for 74 runs on a disastrous Day Four morning.
Nathan Lyon finally reached his landmark figure of 400 wickets and led the procession with four wickets to his name, while the Australian pacers played a solid supporting act to keep chipping away from the other end.
There was a lot of chatter about this England set-ups dependency on Joe Root and the other batters, barring Malan, did themselves no favors to prove otherwise.
Australia take the first step in attempting to retain the Ashes on home soil under a new skipper. Meanwhile, the England players have some catching up to do for the rest of this series. Stick around for the presentations.
Marcus Harris punches this air in delight as Australia take an early lead in the Ashes. They made easy work of it in the end, aided by some miserable batting from England, but the Aussies asserted their dominance, right from the word go. Handshakes all around as the players walk off the field. Root appreciates the support from the English crowd as he makes his way off the field. Pat Cummins can afford a smile as he kicks off his captaincy tenure with a dominant win.
5.1 Mark Wood to Marcus Harris, FOUR! THERE YOU GO! Harris seals it with a boundary and Labuschagne will remain on 0(0). He won't complain though - Australia have taken the series lead 1-0! Coming to the delivery - around the wicket and overpitched outside off with width on offer and all Harris had to do was lean into a drive and cream it through the backward point region as the extra pace takes it rocketing through to the ropes. That will be all - Australia win by 9 wickets!
