Dawid Malan Career
Dawid Malan’s ascension to the top level is slow, but a steady process. Having debuted in domestic cricket way back in 2006, his progress to the top is nothing short of an abled rise.
Dawid Malan Domestic Career
Dawid Malan represented the MCC Young Cricketers in 2006 and Boland in South Africa (2005/2006 season). He then joined Middlesex and made his 1st XI debut in a Twenty20 Cup tie at The Oval against Surrey on July 07, 2006.
By 2007, Malan was the top-scorer in the Second XI Championship with 969 runs at an average of 51. In June 2008, he made his first-class debut for Middlesex, where he scored 132*.
Malan hit the 24th century that was ever made in the Twenty20 Cup on 8 July 2008, after having scored 103 off 54 balls against the Lancashire Lightning in the quarter-final match. Malan holds the world record for the fourth-highest individual score (viz. 103) when batting at number 6 in a T20. He was part of a small group of foreign players who agreed to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final in Lahore, despite the prevalent security situation in Pakistan.
He used to represent the Trent Rockets in The Hundred till 2023.
He moved to Oval Invincibles in the Hundred 2024 and was part of the victorious Oval Invincibles squad.
Malan represents the Sunrisers Eastern Cape Town in the SA20 league.
After quitting red-ball cricket, Malan joined the coaching staff of Yorkshire for the County Championship in 2024 summer.
Dawid Malan IPL Career
After bossing the T20I format and rankings in 2020, Dawid Malan signed a deal with Punjab Kings for INR 1.5 crores in the IPL 2021 auction. Though he scored 26 runs on his IPL debut against Delhi Capitals, it was the only match that he played, and never got a chance to replicate his international spark in the mega event.
Dawid Malan International Career
Dawid Malan is one of the late bloomers in international cricket. His rise from a white-ball specialist to scoring centuries across all formats has earned him a reputation in the English limited-overs circuit.
Dawid Malan ODI Career
After debuting in Test and T20I, Dawid Malan made his much-awaited ODI debut for England against Ireland in Malahide in the only ODI in 2019.
He opened the batting along with James Vince and scored 24 runs before being dismissed by Josh Little as most of the primary squad members were being rested for the ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2019.
Malan scored his maiden ODI century against the Netherlands in the first ODI of England’s tour of the Netherlands in 2022.
Alongside Malan, a mammoth century from wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler and opener Phil Salt meant that England registered the highest-ever score in ODI history, two short of breaching the 500-run mark.
Malan also took his maiden ODI wicket in the form of Phillip Boisevain when he bowled the last over of the match. In the process of his maiden ODI century, he also became the second Englishman to score a century in all three formats of the game after Jos Buttler, and the first and only Englishman to score a century and take a wicket in all three formats so far.
Ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, New Zealand toured England as a preparatory measure. Malan was asked to open the batting and returned with scores of 54, 96, and a century (127) in the series as he became the third-fastest to score 5 ODI centuries after Quinton de Kock and Imam Ul Haq.
The 36-year-old batter was also adjudged the ‘Player Of The Series; for amassing 277 runs.
Malan was the leading run-scorer for England in an otherwise disappointing campaign for the defending champions in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
He scored 404 runs in 9 innings, including a couple of half-centuries and a century (140) against Bangladesh, becoming the oldest Englishman to score a century in the CWC.
Dawid Malan Test Career
Dawid Malan was added to England's Test squad in July 2017 ahead of the third Test against South Africa. On July 27, 2017, he made his Test debut in England vs South Africa as a no. 5 batter. He scored just a solitary run and got bowled out by a yorker by Kagiso Rabada.
He did not have a great series against South Africa, which made it seem like his Test career was going nowhere.
However, he continued playing in the series and played against the West Indies. There he scored his maiden test fifty, which helped England to win their first day-night Test to be held in the country, before starring in the Ashes.
Malan was England’s best batter in the 2017-18 Ashes series, which the Australians won 4-0. He scored his maiden Test century during the 3rd Test at the WACA in Perth. His century was the first in the series for the English team.
Malan was last seen in the longest format in The Ashes down under in 2021-22. He scored a valiant 82 in the second innings of the first Test and an 80 in the second Test, but could not be at his consistent best as England returned home without a victory.
Dawid Malan T20I Career
In June 2017, Dawid Malan was named in England's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad, for the series against South Africa.
On 25 June 2017, he made 78 on his T20I debut for England against South Africa. England won the match and Malan was made 'Player of the Match' for his batting performance.
Malan scored his maiden century against New Zealand in McLean Park, Napier in November 2019. It was the then-fastest century for England and only the second century for England in T20Is after Alex Hales.
In England’s tour of South Africa 2020, Malan churned out 173 runs in 3 matches to soar to the top of the ICC T20I rankings and breach the 900-point mark for the first time in the history of the format.
He was adjudged the 'Player of the Match' in the third and final T20I and the 'Player of the Series' in that tour.
Malan was selected for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, but could not live up to his potential, despite earning the No.1 ranked T20I batter.
He was part of the victorious English squad that won the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
Malan holds the record for the fastest to score 1,000 runs in T20Is among full-member nations. He was looking forward to earning a spot in the 15-member provisional squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, but meager returns in the previous editions, poor form, and heavy competition meant the 36-year-old batter had to be left out in England’s title defense.
