Jason Holder Career
Jason Holder is a lanky all-rounder who has gotten opportunities to prove his worth at a very young age.
Jason Holder Domestic Career
Jason Holder made his First-Class debut for Barbados against Guyana on April 11, 2009. The match was drawn and Holder picked a wicket apiece in each innings.
He made his List-A debut for West Indies Under-19s against Leeward Islands on October 30, 2009, but the match was called off due to rain. Holder made his T20 debut for West Indies A against Zimbabwe on April 22, 2010, after he had played in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2010. He returned with figures of 4-0-24-2 which included the Zimbabwean opener Hamilton Masakadza. He won the Caribbean Premier League title with Barbados Tridents (now Barbados Royals) in August 2014.
In CPL 2019, he led the Barbados Tridents to glory for the second time as they defeated the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final by a margin of 27 runs.
He represented the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League 2020/21 season and won the championship.
In early 2024, Holder played in a five-match deal for Worcestershire in the County Championship in a bid to be recalled to the West Indian Test side. Though he scored a century in one of the five games he played, he was injured during the County stint which eventually ruled him out of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Jason Holder IPL Career
Jason Holder was bought by the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2013 auction. He debuted against the Rajasthan Royals and did not shine in his maiden IPL campaign as the Super Kings finished as runners-up.
A year later, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him for INR 75 lakhs. He played a solitary game and was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2016 auction. However, Holder did not get enough game time to prove his mettle. After a four-year break, Holder returned to IPL folklore as a replacement for Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh in the Sunrisers Hyderabad camp once again.
He found his mojo in that season as he picked up 14 wickets, including an all-round performance against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Royal Challengers Bengaluru) in the eliminator of IPL 2020 as he got SRH past the target along with his captain Kane Williamson.
Holder was retained by the Sunrisers and had a good outing in the next season as well as he picked up 16 wickets.
Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, he was released and signed by the newly-inducted Lucknow Super Giants following his double hat-trick against England. Though he could not fire to his potential with the bat, he continued his form with the ball for the Super Giants by picking 14 wickets.
Surprisingly, he was released and was bought by the Rajasthan Royals for INR 5.75 crores. He could not perform well as he was at the receiving end of a Tim David hammering by conceding a hat-trick of sixes in the final over with 18 required. He was eventually released from the squad along with the likes of Joe Root and went unsold in the IPL 2024 auction.
Jason Holder International Career
Jason Holder has been a holding point in the West Indies colors across formats and will be looking to continue to serve the Men in Maroon compassionately.
Jason Holder ODI Career
Jason Holder made his ODI debut against Australia on February 01, 2013, in Perth. It was a disappointing affair for West Indies as they were bundled out for 70 runs. Holder did manage to take his first international wicket by dismissing Aaron Finch. He featured in the West Indies squad to play in the Champions Trophy 2013.
Holder was appointed as the skipper of the West Indies team at a very young age of 23 years and he led the team in the Cricket World Cup 2015. He guided the team to the quarterfinal, before losing to co-hosts and eventual runners-up New Zealand. He picked up 9 wickets in 7 matches, including a four-wicket haul against the United Arab Emirates. With the bat, he scored a couple of half-centuries against eventual semi-finalists South Africa and India. Holder registered his career-best figures of 5/27 in an ODI against India in 2017 as he led the West Indies to their first win over the visitors in that bilateral series, which was a low-scoring affair.
With the West Indies having to play in the World Cup Qualifiers 2018, Holder led the team to the final of the Qualifiers only to lose against Afghanistan. However, the West Indies qualified for the mega event in England in the subsequent year, with Holder scoring a career-best unbeaten 99 against Papua New Guinea.
He once again led the Men in Maroon in the Cricket World Cup 2019 but failed to qualify for the knockout stages.
Holder was at the receiving end of a famous upset by the Netherlands in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023 when he conceded 30 runs off a super over in a thrilling tied encounter. He is currently the fifth-highest wicket-taker for West Indies in ODIs (159) after Courtney Walsh, Curtly Ambrose, Dwayne Bravo, and Carl Hooper.
Jason Holder Test Career
After good performances in the shorter format, Jason Holder made his Test debut in June 2014 against New Zealand. He picked up 2 wickets and scored a fifty in a losing cause. He scored his maiden Test century against England in Antigua in the second innings of the Test which resulted in a draw.
He became the youngest to captain West Indies in Test cricket at the age of 23 against Sri Lanka in 2015.
Holder has brought laurels to the West Indies team in the longest format of the game with his all-round performances. He took his maiden Test five-wicket haul against Pakistan in 2016. The tall all-rounder scored his main double-century (202*), also his highest in Tests, against the visitors in his home ground in Barbados in January 2019 as West Indies won by a massive margin of 381 runs.
Holder proved that England is his favorite opponent as he recorded his career-best figures in an innings in Tests against the hosts in the first cricketing encounter during the Coronavirus period. He registered a six-wicket haul as West Indies earned a consolation victory in the final Test of the three-match series at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
Holder opted out of the West Indies tour of Australia in early 2024 as he prioritized playing T20 cricket to focus on preparations for the T20 World Cup 2024 lead-up. Despite the unavailability of experienced players like Holder, the West Indians managed to snatch a victory against the Aussies down under after a gap of 27 years, thanks to the new hero in town, Shamar Joseph.
Jason Holder T20I Career
Jason Holder made his T20I debut against New Zealand in January 2014 where he ended up with 2 wickets under his sleeves.
He featured in the World T20 in 2016 and was part of the squad that lifted the trophy in India.
Though Holder captained the team in the Cricket World Cups, he was not an established star in the already flooded T20I line-up of the Men in Maroon. He played in the 2021 and 2022 editions of the T20 World Cup but failed to take West Indies past the line.
He was willing to make it big for them in the T20 World Cup 2024 at home and even prioritized T20 cricket over Test cricket in early 2024. But destiny had other plans as the 32-year-old all-rounder was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury and left-arm pacer Obed McCoy replaced him.
Holder’s T20I career peaked when he became the first West Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in T20Is and the fourth to take a double hat-trick in T20Is after Rashid Khan (AFG), Lasith Malinga (SL) and Curtis Campher (IRE). He took 4 wickets in 4 balls as West Indies trounced England to win a thrilling series 3-2.
Holder also registered his maiden T20I five-wicket haul and won the Player of The Match award as well as the Player of The Series award.
Jason Holder Under-19 Career
Jason Holder was an integral part of the West Indies campaign for the 2010 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. He started the tournament with 2 wickets against Pakistan in the first Group D match. His best performance came in the quarter-final against England when West Indies needed it the most.
After West Indies were dismissed cheaply for 166 runs, Holder knocked out the English team with figures of 5-19. He finished the campaign as the highest wicket-taker for his team in the tournament with 13 wickets.
Jason Holder Captaincy
Jason Holder became the youngest captain for West Indies in January 2015, just before the 2015 World Cup. He led a young West Indian team to the quarter-finals before losing to New Zealand. He was appointed the test captain on September 04, 2015, and was the youngest West Indian to captain in Tests.
West Indies have lost a lot of matches under Holder’s captaincy but his efforts are praisable when the current condition of West Indian cricket is considered. He held the ships when the senior players were having disputes with the board.
Jason Holder Family
Jason Holder was born on November 05, 1991, to his father Ronald Irwin Christopher Holder, and his mother Denise Holder in Barbados.
