Shai Hope Career
Barbados cricketer Shai Hope started his first-class career in the 2013 Regional 4-Day Competition. Even before his first-class career began, Hope had already made his presence felt in the Trinidad Quadrangular T20 tournament in 2012.
The Barbadian player also made his List A debut in Nagico Super50 2015 against Guyana on 17 January. Shai Hope has scored more than 500 runs in his first-class career in two consecutive seasons 2014–15 and 2015–16.
Hope had played only 14 first-class games before he made his international debut. He was called for the national team after the double century against Windwards Islands.
He made his Test debut against England at the Kensington Oval on May 1, 2015.
Despite his average performance in Test cricket, the very next year Shai Hope got the opportunity to debut in the ODI format on 16 November 2016 against Sri Lanka in Harare and fell just three short of a half-century in his very first match.
After a brilliant performance in the ODI format, Shai Hope also made his debut in the T20 format against New Zealand in December next year. 2017 was a great year for Hope where he scored over 500 runs in both Test and ODI formats. The T20 format has been quite a challenging one for Shai Hope so far where he is yet to score 200 runs in a single calendar year.
Recently he played an unbeaten inning of 82 runs against the United States in the T20 World Cup, which is the highest score of his T20 career so far.
Shai Hope made his IPL debut in the 2024 season with Delhi Capitals where Delhi signed him in the auction for INR 75 Lakh.
Shai Hope Domestic Career
Hope made his first-class debut in the 2012-13 Season. The first two years went well for him, but he caught the eyes of the selectors after a magnificent season in 2014-15.
He scored a staggering 628 runs in just nine matches and was the fourth-highest run-getter in the tournament.
On the last day of the 2014-15 Regional four-day competition, he scored a double century against Windwards Islands at the Kensington Oval, drawing many eyes towards him. Shai Hope has scored 4019 runs in his 123 first-class innings in which he has smashed 9 tons at 35.25.
Hope debuted in List A career with the Nagico Super50 tournament for Barbados against Guyana on 17th January 2015.
Shai Hope IPL and other Franchise Cricket
The 2024 IPL season was his debut year in the tournament, In 2023 IPL Auction franchise bought the Barbadian batter for INR 75 Lakh. He played 9 games in that season and scored 183 runs at 22.88 with the best score of 41 runs.
Along with IPL Shai Hope has also been seen playing in PSL for Lahore Qalandars, he made his first appearance in the Pakistan Super League in 2023 where he got to play only two games and scored 48 runs. In PSL Shai Hope has played a total of seven games where he has scored 118 runs at 16.85 with the best score of 47.
Shai Hope has been featured in the Bangladesh Premier League too where he plays for Khulna Tigers, he has played 7 games in BPL scoring 223 runs at 37.16 with the best score of 91 runs.
Shai Hope International Career
Shai Hope made his International arrival on May 1, 2015, with a Test match against England at Bridgetown and the next year he entered white ball cricket in ODI format.
Test cricket hasn’t been his comfortable situation to bat on but since he entered ODI cricket his runs have been flowing. Shai is batting with an average of 50.26 in ODI cricket and is the only West Indian batter in the top 15 ODI batters of the ICC ranking.
Shai Hope has made his T20 debut in 2017 against New Zealand at Nelson but he hasn’t been much so pleasant in this format. Although he has been playing the format since his debut he isn’t as good as ODI format.
Test Career
Shai Hope made his Test debut against England on May 1 2015 at Bridgtown where he didn’t impress the audience and scored only 5 & 9 runs in both innings. His Test numbers looked decent until his ODI career started and then he started scoring some important runs and became one of the dependent batters in the West Indian batting lineup.
Everybody had attached words like talent and potential with the name ‘Shai Hope’, but he couldn’t display any of it in the first few matches.
He proved his talent against England in the second Test on 25 August 2017.
He scored his maiden ton in the first and constructed a partnership of 246 runs. As the team was chasing a mammoth total of 322 in the second innings, he scored another hundred and added 144 runs with Kraigg Brathwaite and took the team to a 5-wicket win.
As of July 2024, Shai Hope has 1726 runs in 38 games at 25.01 and with the best score of 147 runs.
ODI Career
Shai Hope made his first appearance in this format on 16 November 2016 against Sri Lanka at Harare where he fell short by three runs for his debut fifty. Shai Hope’s numbers in this format show up how much he loves to bat in this setup.
In his eight years of ODI career, he has become the 10th highest run-scorer for West Indies by surpassing another Barbadian legend Gordon Greenidge.
Shai Hope is the third fasTest 5000 run-getter in this format along with Virat Kohli and Viv Richards. Shai is the only West Indian player in the top 15 players of the ICC men’s ODI Ranking.

Shai Hope started his T20I career on 29 December 2017 against New Zealand at Nelson. same as the longer format T20I cricket has also been a bit challenging for him, he has only three fifty-plus scores in his almost six years of T20 career and his strike rate has been below 140 throughout his career. Shai scored an unbeaten 82 runs against the United States in the T20 World Cup 2024, his highest T20 score so far.
