Before making his presence in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2018, Hasan Mahmud made his domestic debut for Chittagong Division against Rajshahi Division in the National Cricket League 2017-18 season in Bogra on October 13, 2017. On his first-class (FC) debut, Mahmud picked up a couple of wickets, including that of the Rajshahi Division’s skipper Farhad Hossain.

In the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2017-18 season, the 24-year-old Laxmipur pacer made his List-A debut for Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samiti against Abahani Limited in Savar on February 05, 2018. He went wicketless on his maiden List-A encounter. Soon after his performances at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2018, Mahmud was drafted to play for the Under-23 Emerging Teams Asia Cup as well as the South Asian Games in the very next year.

Under the leadership of Mashrafe Mortaza, Mahmud made his T20 debut for Dhaka Platoon against Rajshahi Royals in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2019-20 season in Mirpur on December 12, 2019. Much akin to his List-A debut, the youngster went wicketless in his maiden BPL outing. However, he finished the season with 10 wickets in 13 innings with a career-best BPL haul of 4/32.

Ahead of the BPL 2022-23 season, Mahmud had moved from Dhaka Platoon to Rangpur Riders. In 28 matches across the two seasons, the speedster has scalped 30 wickets.

In Ireland’s tour of Bangladesh in March 2023, Mahmud bagged his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs in the third and final ODI held in Sylhet. He ran through the top order to claim the wickets of Stephen Doheny, Paul Stirling, and Harry Tector and wrapped up the tail to claim his maiden international five-wicket haul and bowl out the Irishmen for a paltry 101.

The 24-year-old pacer was drafted into the Bangladesh setup for the ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2023 held in India. He made his CWC debut against the hosts on October 19, 2023, and managed to pick up the wicket of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma.

In the next game, an outright thrashing from Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen saw the Bangladeshis looking clueless. Though Mahmud managed to pick up the crucial wickets of both the batters, it was too late to scamper and he was at the receiving end of the thrashing by the end of the innings.

Mahmud was not provided with enough opportunities to establish himself at the mega event as Bangladesh crashed out of the tournament in the group stage.

Hasan Mahmud Test Career

Hasan Mahmud has taken Test cricket by storm, despite debuting in the longest format of the game relatively later since his maiden international outing. He made his Test debut for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka in the second and final Test in Chattogram on March 30, 2024, in Sri Lanka’s tour of Bangladesh.

In the first innings, Mahmud claimed his maiden Test wicket in the form of opener Dimuth Karunaratne and dismissed all-rounder Angelo Mathews as well. He registered a four-wicket haul in the second innings and was impressive despite the hosts’ defeat to the visitors.

The Laxmipur speedster was a vital cog in Bangladesh’s historic away series victory against Pakistan in Pakistan in August-September 2024. In the second Test that took place in Rawalpindi, he picked up his maiden Test five-wicket haul and wrapped up the tail to script history for the visitors.

In the first Test of the ongoing Test series of Bangladesh’s tour of India in September 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Mahmud rattled the top-order to create a mini-collapse for the hosts. He dismissed the Indian batting mainstays for single digits, which included the prized wickets of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. With that wicket of Sharma, Mahmud has dismissed the veteran Indian opener on three different occasions in three different formats namely; in a T20 World Cup match in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, in a CWC match in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, and the ongoing World Test Championship cycle 2023-25.

He finished the innings with his second five-wicket haul, by wrapping up the innings with the final nail in the coffin in the form of Jasprit Bumrah to bowl out India for 376. Mahmud also became the first Bangladeshi bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in Tests on Indian soil.
