Daryl Mitchell made his List-A debut for the Northern Districts in 2011 at the age of 20. He also made his First-Class debut for the Northern Districts in 2012. He went on to excel in all formats for the Northern Districts.
Post June 2020, Mitchell made a move from the Northern Districts to Canterbury. He took his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket for Canterbury against Otago. Mitchell was signed by the Middlesex for the latter half of T20 Blast 2021. He was signed by Lancashire to represent them in both the County Championship as well as the T20 Blast in January 2023.
Daryl Mitchell IPL Career
Daryl Mitchell was bought by the Rajasthan Royals for INR 75 lakhs in the mega auction for IPL 2022. However, he had played only two matches for the Royals and did not get any further chances to play. Mitchell went unsold in the subsequent auction in IPL 2023 but made headlines when he became the Chennai Super Kings’ costliest purchase of the IPL 2024 auction, with the New Zealand all-rounder fetching INR 14 crores for the season, the third-most expensive player of the auction, after Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.
Daryl Mitchell International Career
Daryl Mitchell has been one of the most formidable cricketers for the Black Caps across all formats. He averages more than 50 in ODIs and Tests and has been a force to reckon with in crunch situations.
Daryl Mitchell ODI Career
Daryl Mitchell made his ODI debut on March 20, 2021, against Bangladesh in Dunedin. He did not get a chance to prove his selection as Bangladesh was bundled out for 131 runs. Mitchell did not take too long to prove his inclusion as he scored his maiden ODI ton in the same series against Bangladesh and finished on 100 unbeaten.
In April 2023, Mitchell went on to score back-to-back centuries (113 and 129*) against Pakistan at Rawalpindi. However, both his valiant centuries went in vain as Pakistan won the series by a margin of 4-1. Mitchell’s road to preparation for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 was evident as he smashed 118* off just 91 balls and stitched a partnership with fellow centurion Devon Conway in a successful chase against England in September 2023.
Mitchell had a fantastic CWC campaign as he amassed 552 runs in 9 innings at an average of 69 and a healthy strike rate of 111.06. He smashed two centuries in the ICC CWC 2023, both came in a losing cause against hosts India. However, he did manage to create some individual records in the process as he became the second New Zealander to score a century against India in a CWC match after Glenn Turner.
Mitchell went down fighting after scoring a valiant 134, which also was his highest individual score in ODIs while chasing against hosts India in the semifinal of ICC CWC 2023 as New Zealand lost to India by 70 runs.
He also became the first batter to score twin centuries against India in a single CWC edition and the second to do so in CWC history after Ricky Ponting. As of May 2024, Mitchell has scored 1577 runs in a total of 39 matches at an impressive average of 52.56, including 5 half-centuries and 6 centuries.
Daryl Mitchell Test Career
Daryl Mitchell made his Test debut against England at his home ground in Hamilton on November 29, 2019, when he was called as a replacement for an injured Colin de Grandhomme. Mitchell justified his inclusion with a gritty 73 and bowled a few overs on what was termed a sluggish turf to play on.
Mitchell scored his maiden Test century against Pakistan at Christchurch in January 2021 as NZ won by an innings and 176 runs. However, Mitchell, who was part of the initial squad to play India in the World Test Championship Final 2021 did not find himself in the final squad and missed out on tasting success as New Zealand won the final by 8 wickets.
Mitchell had a stellar series in England as he amassed a record 538 runs at an average of 107.60, including two half-centuries, and three centuries which also included a career-best score of 190 at Trent Bridge. The all-rounder also became the first batter in the history of Test cricket to score a century in each match of an away series (that includes three or more Tests). He also became the first New Zealander and the sixth visiting batter overall to score centuries in three consecutive Tests in England. In that series, Mitchell stitched the highest fifth-wicket partnership (236) for New Zealand in Test history with Tom Blundell as these two batters were the only shining spots for the visitors in a pretty one-sided affair.
As of May 2024, Mitchell has amassed 1608 runs in 23 matches at an excellent average of 50.25, which also includes 10 half-centuries and 5 centuries.
Daryl Mitchell T20I Career
Daryl Mitchell made his T20I debut against India on February 06, 2019, at Wellington. Though he could not impress with the bat in his maiden international outing, he managed to compensate for it with the ball as he managed to register an economical spell of 2.2-0-13-1 at an economy rate of 5.57.
Mitchell was promoted up the order and asked to open the batting in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. He came clutch for the Kiwis in the semifinal against England as the smashing all-rounder scored an unbeaten 72 off 47 balls and was adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’ for his heroics with the bat as he stitched a match-winning partnership with James Neesham.
He was part of the New Zealand squad which finished as the runners-up in that T20 WC, which was eventually won by Australia.
Mitchell played a handy knock of 53 not out against Pakistan on a pretty slow surface in the first semifinal of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. However, it was not enough as Pakistan cruised to their second final appearance. The 33-year-old has been selected in the 15-member provisional squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and would be looking to make it big with his exploits.
