Shadab Khan Biography

Shadab Khan is a Pakistani cricketer who plays in all the formats of the game for the national team. He was born on 4 October 1998 in Mianwali, Punjab, Pakistan. Shadab is an all-rounder, but primarily a right arm leg-break bowler.

Shadab generally bowls in a non-aggressive style and uses his guile to fox the batsman instead of going for the ball. His bowling involves wide-angle deliveries that have the ability of flight as well as the flat track.

Shadab moved to Rawalpindi at the age of 12 and became a regular player in his school cricket team. He later joined the National Cricket Academy in Lahore to learn from former Pakistani greats like Mushtaq Ahmed and Abdul Qadir.

He looked steady in his growth and was braced to be selected for the U-19 World Cup in 2016. Abdul stood out, as usual, ending the tournament as the highest wicket taker in spite of Pakistan’s exit.

He was soon selected for the national team at a very young age. He has represented the following teams- Rawalpindi Rams, K-Electric, Khulna Titans, Brisbane Heat, Islamabad United, Pakistan Under-19s, and Trinbago Knight Riders.

Shadab Khan International Career

Shadab Khan T20I Career

Shadab Khan has played most of his matches in this format. He played his first T20I match against the West Indies on 26 March 2017. His bowling turned out to be exceptional, taking three wickets for seven runs and four wickets for fourteen runs in his first and second matches, respectively. In the next couple of games of his debut series against the West Indies, Shadab picked up another three wickets. Then, he played a three-match T20I series against the ICC World XI in which he took only two wickets and had a high economy rate. Shadab was also included in the Pakistan squad against Sri Lanka. He performed moderately, taking two wickets and scoring 16 runs in the three matches. In 2018, Shadab played an away series against New Zealand. With his right-arm leg break bowling style, Shadab picked up five wickets in the three T20Is held in New Zealand. Shadab’s next big series came against Australia in October 2018. Shadab kept on improving his bowling performances, taking one wicket in the first match, two in the second, and then finally three in the last one. Just like at the beginning of the year, Shadab finished the year also by playing against the Kiwis for a three-match T20I series. He took four wickets and remained unutilised with the bat.

In 2019, Shadab played a series against South Africa. The South African batters enjoyed Shadab’s bowling as he was hit for a lot of runs and managed to pluck only one wicket. He was also presented the player of the match award for his quickfire knock of 22 runs off eight balls and his bowling figures of two wickets for 34 runs in the last match against South Africa. His next big series was against England in 2020. In the three games in Old Trafford, Shadab took five wickets with an economy rate of 9.58 and scored fifteen runs with the bat. Next, in December 2020, he went up against New Zealand in a three-match T20I series. Shadab failed to pluck any wickets in the series but scored his career-best 42 runs in the first match. In 2021, he played a couple of series against England and the West Indies. Against England in a three-match T20I series, Shadab had a high economy rate of 9.7 but still managed to pick up five wickets. With the bat, Shadab performed in the second match, scoring an unbeaten 36 runs off just 22 balls. In the games against West Indies, he did not get many opportunities and had an average performance.

Shadab Khan was included in the Pakistan squad for the seventh edition of the ICC T20 World Cup. In the opening match against India, Shadab had an economy rate of under six and also managed to take the wicket of Rishabh Pant. After performing moderately in the next few matches of the tournament, in the semi-finals, Shadab bowled exceptionally well against the Australians, sending four batters back to the pavilion. In 2022, Shadab Khan was also selected for the Pakistan squad for the Asia Cup. Shadab took eight wickets in five matches, including his career-best bowling figures of four wickets for 18 runs against Hong Kong, and also scored 54 runs with the bat in three innings. Next, he played three matches against England in which he took three wickets and had an economy rate of 8.9. His most recent game was against New Zealand in Hagley Oval, in which he took one wicket and did not get the opportunity to score runs.

Shadab Khan ODI Career

Shadab Khan made his ODI debut on 7 April 2017 against the West Indies. In his first match, he took two wickets for fifty-two runs. The following two games of the series went smoothly for him, taking three wickets. Shadab was included in the Pakistan squad for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. In a high-pressure opening match against the arch-rivals India, Shadab took one wicket for 52 runs and scored 14 with the bat. After playing in the remaining three games of the tournament, Shadab added another three wickets to his tally. Next, he played in a five-match series against Sri Lanka, in which he picked up a total of 10 wickets. Only getting one batting opportunity before the Sri Lanka series, Shadab proved his mettle by scoring his maiden half-century in the first match. Then, in 2018, Shadab played two five-match away series against New Zealand and Zimbabwe in January and July, respectively. Against the Kiwis, Shadab picked up five wickets and scored 140 runs, including two half-centuries. And then, against Zimbabwe, Shadab registered his best and second-best bowling figures of four wickets for 28 runs and four wickets for 32 runs, respectively, in ODI cricket.

Later in 2018, Shadab was named as part of the Pakistan squad for the 2018 Asia Cup. Shadab picked up four wickets in four matches and scored 22 runs. A few weeks later, Shadab played a game against New Zealand in which he took four wickets for 48 runs in his ten overs. In 2019, Shadab picked up five wickets and scored 55 runs against South Africa in a five-match T20I series. Then in June 2019, Shadab featured in the Pakistan squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He played seven matches in the tournament, picking up nine wickets in six innings and scoring 43 runs. In April 2021, Shadab played two ODIs against South Africa in which he scored 46 runs but did not manage to claim any wickets. Then, he played three ODIs against England, in which he took three wickets and scored 51 runs in total. His next series was in June 2022, in which Shadab plucked three wickets and scored 28 runs in the first couple of matches, then scored 86 runs and took four wickets for 62 runs in the third match. Shadab’s last series was against the Netherlands in August, in which he picked up only one wicket and scored 48 runs.

Shadab Khan Test Career

Shadab played his first Test match against the West Indies on 30 April 2017. In his first Test, Shadab picked up only one wicket and managed to score forty runs. His next match came a year later, in May 2018 against Ireland. This time, Shadab impressed the selectors, taking four wickets and scoring 59 runs, including one half-century, in the match. Due to his brilliant performance, Shadab was made to play in a couple of Test matches against England. Playing in foreign conditions against a strong team, Shadab scored one half-century in each of the games and also took a total of three wickets. His next match was in January 2019, against South Africa. Shadab took only one wicket and scored five runs in the first innings but made a comeback in the second one, dismissing three batters and scoring an unbeaten 47 runs. More than a year later, on 5 August 2020, Shadab played his next and last Test match. Against England in Old Trafford, Shadab took two wickets and scored a total of sixty runs.

Shadab Khan Debut

Shadab Khan made his international debut for the senior side on 26 March 2017 against West Indies in a T20 international. He surprised everyone by picking up three wickets while conceding just seven runs in his four overs.

Shadab later made his ODI debut on 7 April 2017 against West Indies and picked up two wickets, going for 52 runs in nine overs.

Shadab Khan was given a test cap on 30 April 2017 in the same tour of West Indies. He picked up a wicket in the first innings and scored 16 runs in what turned out to be a loss for Pakistan. It remains the only test played by Shadab.

Shadab Khan Rise to Glory

Shadab Khan was a quick learner and started to grow at a staggering pace. His talent caused a huge uproar in the international turf and resulted in his selection at an age of just 18. Shadab’s international career began with T20Is and was also quite successful in ODIs.

Shadab’s international debut has so far been his best performance in a T20I as he also became Pakistan’s youngest ever cricketer to pick up four wickets on debut. The performance in the debut and following games earned him a place in Pakistan’s 2017 Champions Trophy winning side.

Shadab also turned out to be a reliable batsman for Pakistan and scored his maiden half-century on 16 October 2017 against Sri Lanka. This half-century came in a solid partnership of 109 with Babar Azam which helped Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 32 runs.

Shadab made headlines with a Player of the Series award in the tour of West Indies. He had 10 wickets to his name in four matches.

Shadab Khan Club Career

Shadab Khan played his first domestic match for Islamabad in the 2016 Pakistan Cup. He went on to play his T20 matches for Rawalpindi, before signing for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League. Shadab’s performances earned him a contract for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League.
