That brings us to the end of our coverage for the first ODI between Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Switch tabs to follow the Women's Ashes game which is currently underway but from here, this is myself (Arya Sekhar Chakraborty) biding adieu also on behalf of my fellow comentator and good mate Pradeep. Goodnight! Cheers!
Hashmatullah Shahidi (Afghanistan captain): We played brilliantly all through the day and the fielding was top-notch. That catch turned the match around. The way Gurbaz and Ibrahim started, I told them not to rush and play accordingly and play risk-free, especially in the first 10 overs. Yeah, he is okay, it was just cramps in his body. He will recover (On Farooqi’s injury).
Fazalhaq Farooqi is the Player of the Match! Here's what he has to say: We won the first game and I have contributed, I'm happy. I always wanted to bowl in right areas and I've achieved that.
Tamim Iqbal [Bangladesh captain]: I thought, the weather and the other things, we need to blame them, it's part and parcel of the game. We had a good start, we lost our way later with back to back wickets, some lose shots by our batters, including myself. 160 odd runs on that surface isn't enough any day, wicket was bit tricky and 50 runs more, it would've game on. It's just 7th game of Hridoy, he's looking good at the moment.
Ibrahim Zadran 41*(58) | Rahmanullah Gurbaz 22(45) Shakib Al Hasan 1/9(5) | Taskin Ahmed 1/26(5.4)
That was a frustrating day, and in the end, rain had the final say. Afghanistan is the deserved winner after a top-class bowling performance. When the match was halted for the 3rd time in the day, Afghanistan were 17 runs ahead on the DLS par and in the end, the game didn't resume as rain continued playing spoilsport. The Bangladesh bowlers were tidy during the 21 overs they bowled but in the end, it was a comfortable victory for Afghanistan.
Earlier in the day it was Fazalhaq Farooqi, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman who bowled brilliantly, eventually restricting Bangladesh to 169/9 in 43 overs. The opening duo of Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz started off in a cautious fashion but that is all they needed at that stage. A fifty-run partnership took some time coming but the platform was laid and despite the fall of Gurbaz at a crucial juncture, it looked like a comfortable chase for the Afghans.
Taskin Ahmed then ignited Bangladesh's hopes with a beautiful delivery to Rahmat Shah which brought about his downfall. Then the fast bowlers targeted Hashmatullah Shahidi with a barrage of short deliveries. After getting away with a few close shaves, he started taking on the short deliveries and found some important boundaries. Rain returned after the 21st over and they had the final say in the end.
The inevitable has happened and Afghanistan has won this game by 17 runs under DLS method,
9:57 PM IST: It seems like, the rain has completely stopped and the main cover has been removed too. Can spot Taskin and few other practicing as well. Hopefully, the resumption is not far away! The umpire's are now making their way to the middle to do the inspection! Bit of a circus going on there, the main cover is back on again! The rain is back and it's heavy this time!
9:51 PM IST: The main cover is coming back on the strip, this is just not good news at the moment, it's been that kind of a day really. The rain has returned at Chattogram!
9:44 PM IST: The rain has stopped, there's a bit of a drizzle still there. The covers are slowly being peeled off at the moment and there's plenty of activity around the strip. Stay tuned!
In case you're wondering, Afghanistan are well ahead with the DLS par score and if no further play takes place, Afghanistan will win the game!
