In 2017, Shakib became just the 3rd Bangladeshi batter to score a Test double-hundred when he hammered a brutal 217 against New Zealand in Wellington. However, as it turned out, it didn't prove to be enough for Bangladesh to win, even save the match.
He was reinstalled as captain in December 2017 following Mushfiqur Rahim's resignation. However, in 2019, he lost his post as he was handed a 12-month suspension from international cricket for his failure to report a bookie's approach to the ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit.
Post his comeback after the ban, Shakib became a reluctant Test player but with Bangladesh's performances being woeful under Mominul Haque, he was cajoled to assume leadership responsibilities in June 2022 following his brilliant performance in the Test series against Sri Lanka.
